Which Kimber?? (beating a dead horse!)

I've decided my next purchase will be a Kimber in .45 ACP, but I can't decide which one to get. It will be my first and maybe only (yeah right) 1911 style handgun. I will use it for plinking, occasional carry (won't be worn for long periods of time and generally not during hot weather so size isn't really an issue), and some informal and semi-formal target shooting. The most important characteristics to me would be reliability and accuracy.

I really don't know much about 1911's and I'm wondering if there would be any real difference in accuracy between the full sized Kimbers with the barrel bushing and the smaller ones with the heavy barrel and no bushing. The two models I'm considering are the Custom Stainless and the Compact Stainless.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I can't give you an opinion on the Custom Stainless but I am one very pleased owner of a steel-framed Compact Stainless.

I love this gun. I have 600+ rounds through it. It has good accuracy, conceals fairly well, and looks sharp. I read posts from all these guys that carry full-sized 1911s and swear they conceal them well, but it seems like a lot of gun to hide to me.

I haven't had any problems with the gun at all.

Fortunately, you have a fun decision to make. Either way, I don't think you'll choose wrong or be disappointed.

I have a full sized Kimber and a Colt Commander. I believe the Kimber Compact is the same as the Commander as far as size/weight. I would recommend you try both if possible to determine which is best for you. To me. The Commander shoots like a full size, but feels like a pip-squeak. Something about it just feels great, but seems like a full size gun in the shooting department.
I would say go with the Commander first, and the full sized next. You know deep in your heart you're going to get both anyhow ;)
1911's are an addiction ;) Hope they never find a cure.

Have had many in my hand, IMO Ultra is too small, Compact is too small, 5" 1911-pattern feels just right.

I recommend the 5" stainless. I believe you will own the finest low-cost 1911 available.

All I've manufactured custom loads for have been tack-drivers (even two Ultra Carry's).

Shake, if you're only going to use it for occasional carry and in a climate where you can conceal it easily, I'd say go for the full-size stainless custom. You'll feel better about it when you're target shooting. Of course, as Rae said, you'll end up buying both. I did.

My Kimber Custom Stainless has shot like a dream. I would suggest getting the lower end Kimber such as the Custom . After you get the 1911 bug your next step will be a Wilson.

Make it easy. Get the sales person to put all the Kimbers onto the counter, blindfold you then mix them up so you don't know which is where. The first one you grab is the one you buy. It will be just a great as any of the others. :D
