Which is the more common on gun store Shelves: 416 Rem or 458 Win

Just curious which is easier to find. In Alaska, Africa, & other locations. Also what kind of load selection is there? Is federal's stuff common at the places that carry 416 or 458?

I have a .416 Rem and if I hadn't got the 10 boxes of ammo when I bought the Beast I would be SOL. My fave shop has exactly two boxes of .416 Rem in one brand/load. They have at least five different loads in .458. Hell, they have a bigger selection of .416 Weatherby and Rigby than the Rem Mag. Cabelas has a couple .458 loads in their catalog, but absolutely no .416s. I am guessing that trend is common.

Andabeer: Would you mind listing what brand & loads your shop has for the 416 and 458?

Did they have Hornady's Heavy magnum loading for the 458 with the 500 FMJ? Or Federal's 500 grain TB solid?

I am starting to budget and plan for a heavy. I like the 416's much better than the 458. But I am leaning towards a 458 Lott since you can shoot 458 Win, which I thought would be more common than the 416 Rem or Rigby, in it. Also it is much easier to find bullets that will perform at reduced power levels for the 458. You can just use 300 or 400 grain bullets designed for the 45-70/450 Marlin. My thinking is that with 45-70 bullets I could handload the Lott down to medium rifle ballistics and use it for hog and black bear shooting with comfortable levels of recoil.

BTW has anyone handled Winchester's Custom rifles in 458 Lott or 416 Rem/Rgby??

Hmmm, you're asking me to go to the gunshop? I dunno. I generally get into trouble there (financially). OK, you talked me into it. I'll see what they got. Need a sling for that .416 anyways.

The store was pretty busy, suprising for a Thursday afternoon, so I didn't have a clerk helping me. Had to lean over the counter and use my aging eyes to read the boxes as best I could.

.416RM

They actually expanded this selection by a 100%, instead of one load, two loads, both Remington. 400 gr. Swift A-frame
400 gr. Solid. I have several boxes of 350 gr. A-frames so I know that's out there as well.

.458WM

Approx. 6 loads in Federal and Remington, again it was hard to read the boxes from the distance. 500 gr. Solid, 500 gr. Soft Point, and a 400 gr. (?) Bear Claw which I believe is just a fancy Soft Point.

I am a big fan of Hornadays stuff but they had no loads in either caliber. (their .308 Light Mag BTHP (match) is awesome)

Managed to get out of there with minimal damage to the bank account. It was close too. They had a double rifle in .416 Rigby which would have looked good on me in Africa next month. Only $7000 .

Thanks.

The 400 grain Trophy Bonded is a premium soft point. Sort of like a Swift A frame but instead of lead on the bottom is solid copper.

I am starting to think I live in the wrong state. There aren't any gun shops like that here.

In Africa, the calibers each of my PH's had were 30/06, .375, and .458. Why? Ammo is available. I don't recall ANY .416's. As you go north from RSA, ammo becomes increasingly difficult to find in most sporting calibers. Especially outside the big cities.
