Which is the best Ruger 9mm?

I'm not a big fan of Ruger semi-auto pistols - mostly for asthetic reasons, but a friend is considering one for his adult daughter. The low price, current rebate, and good reputation of the company make them tempting. I must admit, the rebate has got me considering one myself. However, I'm not too familar with them. We were looking on-line last night. For example, I think they show "new" decocker only models. Does this mean the standard models have a decocker that can also be used as a safety? Also, they seem to have a new version about every 2-3 years. Which would be the best choice? Any info on the Ruger 9mm pistols will be appreciated.

By the way, I also suggested he check out the HS2000, CZ75B, and a few others. But I think the Rugers will beat them all in price, and probably at least equal them in durability and reliability. I'd rather have the CZ, but I don't see anything really "wrong" with the Rugers.

The best Ruger 9mm IMHO is the KP95DC. It is a de-cock only with no external safety. However, if you keep your finger off the trigger like you're supposed to, then you should have no problem!!! The P95 is butt ugly, so is the Glock!! So what!! It goes bang every time I ask it to and does not care what I feed it. I can load alternate hollow point and hard ball rounds, and it will fire without so much as a hiccup. While on the bigger side of compact, it can be concealed easily with the right holster. I carry mine in a Bianchi Shadow II pancake. The polymer frame keeps the weight down too.

The P89 is a full size gun with an alloy frame and an external safety that is also a de-cocker. I sold mine for that reason. I do not want a safety on at the most critical time!!! The grips on the P89 were also to fat for me. One thing in it's favor was that magazines were interchangable between the two pistols.

These are the only two P-series pistols that I have any experience with. I still have my P95. In fact, I used it to qualify for my AZ CCW. It is a very well built, reliable handgun!!!!

PISTOLS

Get the Ruger that 'feels' best in your hand, or buy the CZ75 (and put skateboard tape on the front- and back-traps).

The 9 is fine.

I am a P95 owner, and I'm delighted with it. Part of that is individual ergonomics; the gun fits me and I shoot it better than some other guns. Part of it is the oft-mentioned reliability. Part of it is that it holds 15+1 rounds, and hi-caps are available & reasonably priced, so I can afford to shoot double-taps if the SHTF.

Didn't like the three dot painted sights, so I added WIlliams fiber optic sights, which are great. I'm debating whether to add skateboard tape to the front & back straps or try checkering then with a Dremel.

As for looks, Forrest Gump says beauty is as beauty does. If it saves my life, it's gorgeous.

Oh, come on you guys!
IMO the Rugers are beautiful pistols! I think the fact that they are $200 cheaper than SIGs or Glocks has people fooled. What else can you ask for:

1. They are probably one of the most reliable pistols around (i.e. they eat anything)
2. They are super accurate.
3. The polymer framed pistols are lightweight (27 ounces, I believe for the p95)
4. They can take a licking and keep on ticking after thousands of rounds.
5. They are mechanically simple and don't break.
6. Hi cap magazines are available and cheap.

This makes the Ruger P-series one of the best pistols around. I think the fact that they are less expensive has people fooled. If Ruger charged $600 for them, people would be raving about them. It's sort of the Makarov philosophy. No one can believe that a $150 pistol can be as good as a $600 Sig or Glock. But it is true.

Go with the P-series. You won't regret it. I have the P94 (.40) and the P 95 (9mm). If I had to have only one, I would choose the p95. It's a great pistol.

There is not a "best" Ruger pistol. What is best for me may not be best for you. I happen to prefer the P97 (.45 ACP) and P95 (9mm), because the polymer Rugers have the best grip and IMO the best trigger pulls of the P-Series. Your results may very, so try all of them. :)

I have a P94 and a P95. My preference goes to the P95 (KP95DC to be precise). The trigger, in both double and single action, is better in the P95. Weight is considerably lighter (P95). Fit to the hand and handling (ergonomics) is essentially the same for both weapons. Hicaps are available for both (magazines are interchangalbe between them).

I wouldn't hesitate to buy any of the Ruger products. In my opinion, they are both underrated and under priced (don't tell Ruger). Maybe it's the other brands that are over priced???

P95DC

I have the polymer-frame decocker Ruger 9mm. This is the first centerfire Ruger pistol I've owned. I like it very, very much. No, it's not a Sig or a Browning or an H&K. It does, however, sling 9mm rounds downrange without failing to feed, extract or eject and does so with better than mere combat accuracy. The trigger pull in DA and in SA are acceptable-at least as good as S&W autos and better (IMHO) than the Glocks. And the best part is that it does all this for lots less money than the glamor guns.

Now, I'm not knocking the other makes, but the Ruger pistols take it on the chin very often from some brand snobs. The Sigs, Glocks, H&Ks and Brownings are very fine pistols and I've owned or shot all of them except the Sigs. The Ruger is, for my purposes, just as good as any of them. I usually use it for HD and occasionally CCW carry as well. I have great confidence in the Ruger's ability to protect me, if it is asked to do so, with a minimum of fuss. The only thing that would make it better is a couple of 15-round mags.
