Which is considered to be the best SA?

I need some advice on choosing a single action revolver. I am leaning toward the Beretta Stampede, however I do not know how it compares with other models. If anyone has any advice on the subject I would love to hear it. I don't want to end up wishing I had gone with something else.

Without question the Freedom arms , Fit , finish , lockup and accuracy . Go to a revolver silhouette match and see who rules the 200 meter line . But it is going to cost ya !! Used bargins start around $900 . If you just want a plinker or something to shoot SASS with its a different story , I would go with a ruger.

Beretta Stampede has been a poor quality clone. I know of no Stampedes that have been ready to go from the factory. I still give the Stampede a DON'T BUY. Colt and USFAs are about equal in quality and price. Colts go up in value though. The best deal at present is to buy a Uberti and send it to a custom gunsmith for tuning. I give Ruger Vaqueros a DON'T BUY at this time. They are involved in a unofficial recall due to firing pin defects. I have yet to have a Taurus Gaucho in my hands. The absolute best, hand finished and good to go single actions are the new Remington 1875s from Hartford Armoury.

I would have to agree with Sir William......the 1875 Remington from Hartford Armory is a superb SA revolver. The frame is a one piece design...there is not a seperate grip frame like other SA revolvers, and the fit and finish are second to none. But.....a lot of folks can't aford the $1400.00 plus price tag, although they are worth every penny. If you are on a tight budget, then the Ruger Vaquero (old model) would be my choice. The new model Vaqueros are having some QC problems, but the old models are fine, and are tough enough to last well past your lifetime.

This might be a newbie question, but how can I tell the difference between a new model and a old model Vaquero? I tried to google it, but couldn't find anything helpful. Thank you everyone for the advice. Thanks for steering me away from future headaches. I don't have the funds right now for the more expensive models, but I now have a good longer term project... The Remington type 1875 was beautiful.

the name of the model of ruger is on the frame

The old model Vaquero just says Ruger Vaquero on the frame, it's a larger gun, heavier, bigger cylinder, beefier, over 700,000 made since about 1993 or so. Usually has wood or fake ivory grip panels. Is availabel in blued and stainless, and comes in several calibers and barrel lengths.

The New Vaquero was just released this year, says New Vaquero on the frame, is a smaller frame, cylinder and is lighter, comes with black hard rubber panels. Is available in blued and stainless, in .357 mag and .45 Colt only.

The New Vaquero is the same size grip and frame as a Colt, and all the clones. The old (or regular) Vaquero is larger and heavier by a bit.

Good luck choosing, there's a PLETHORA of single actions out there.

I have never handled or fired one, so take this as you may, but Freedom Arms is one of the absolute bests, if not THE best. I have done some research on a good SA, and Freedom Arms is my choice. (I am quite sure my research doesn’t equate to other TFL member’s experience). Rugers are tough. Berettas are pretty, but not really proven. Colts are expensive, and Ubertis are decent. This is just based off of my findings. I really want a Freedom Arms SA for peace of mind in the woods. The model 97 in .45 Colt with a round-butt grip frame and fixed sights should suit me just right.

best SA?

the FA is stronger than any ruger and has nicer finish/build quality than the colt or USFA. if that is what you want, it is a simple answer.

if you want a SAA, get one from colt or USFA.

if you want something to shoot in comboy action type stuff, get a cheap italian clone and send it to a smith to have it tuned right.
