Which HK USP for Me?

I'm seriously looking into an HK USP .45 or a Tactical, but I'm unsure if I should buy the plane jane USP now, or wait awhile until I have the money for the tactical. Help me decide!

Also, as an aside, I remember someone mentioning a USP .45f. What's this model and how does it differ from a regular USP?

Thanks

No difference...

The USP 45f is just internet shorthand for a Full-Sized USP, as diferentiated from the Compact which gets designated as a H&K USP45c.

As far as your question goes, unless you are planning on using a sound suppressor with your pistol, probably the USP45f with a match trigger is a better deal monetary wise. That was my choice in the end.

as usual, YMMV, IMHO, FWIW, and all that...

IMHO//if you want to risk the extra outlay the tactical may be worth more in the future..and it has a certain coolness factor the usp45f does not..I was at the nra convention in KC and saw lots of people go google eye over the tactical with its threaded barrel..you just may be able to sell it easier in the future if you ever decide so...i agree with jt king...however...the standard usp45f is a better deal right now monetary wise..if you still cant decide..do what most gun nuts do..buy both..you always have to have a spare..HK-out

I got a fullsize USP 45 from my dealer last year for $615 when the Tacticals were still selling for way over $900.

Now you can find deals such as McDonald tactical selling them for $839 I believe - including the $150 HK Boker knife.

Taking into account that HK raised prices and now you're looking at around $660 (Cal's Sporting Armory price) for the regular 45 - add on $100 for the match trigger kit and $215 for the CCF o-ring/threaded barrel and the Tactical price becomes very reasonable. This is without even adding on the adjustable target sights or the fancy "chambered round extractor red indicator" ;)

Don't get me wrong though, there's nothing wrong with the "plain jane" 45, I love mine - and you can always add the trigger and barrel later - the sights are only useful if you're going to stick a supressor on it (raised front sight gives a field of vision over the can).

The Tactical is a USPF ...

with target sights, match trigger and an extended, threaded O-ring barrel.

IMHO, if you want a carry pistol, you'd be better off getting the USPF. The Tactical is a great range pistol and certainly scores in the "cool" department. But unless you put a suppressor on it, the threaded barrel is more of a nuisance than not. You need to protect the threads with a screw on protector or flash suppressor which presents a holstering problem. While the O-ring barrel adds to the accuracy of the pistol, it is insignificant for a combat pistol at typical combat range. Also, the target sights sit up really high to see over the can -- too high for me for a carry pistol -- on which I prefer fixed tritium sights that are mounted low and out of the way to prevent snagging.

You can add the Tactical parts to your USPF later if you desire. A flush replacement O-ring barrel is available from Jarvis, Bar-Sto or CCF. A factory Tactical barrel and other factory parts are available from several sources. You can get the Tactical case direect from HK. For carry, I highly recommend the USP45F or USP45C with night sights.

You might want to check the laws in your state about handguns that accept silencers. NJ doesn't allow them, or at least that's my interpretation of the statute. I bought a USP .45F and am extreamely pleased with it. The only things I added were a Houge sleeve and Entreprise night sights. Either gun you choose I know you'll be pleased.

Get the TACTICAL even if you must wait a while. The "O" Ring on the barrel is worth the wait..It does make a difference. Add to that the match trigger, and unless you want a carry gun, thats the way to go..Shop around a little, and you should be able to get one pretty close to the price of the 45 f..

Same thing happened to me when I was decideing.. I went with the Tactical with a Flash Suppressor what a Awsome gun I would definately get the Tactical... Worth Every penny....

You can always get threaded extended barrels (Match grade and must be fitted) from AWC ... they will thread and make a flush end cap or sell the entire barrel. You gotta have a registered suppresor and the serial no to prove it before they will sell you the barrel and the buffer (if wanted).

I chose the UFPf over the Tactical as I anticipated moving to a state where the "T" word might raise a few liberal eyebrows. If you ever plan to "build up" your USP with features found on the Tactical, I would go with the big T.

Either way, both are superb firearms.

I am trying to decide this too. I was thinking of getting the 45f and putting the threaded barrel on it. The other problem as I understand is the threads on the tactical are opposite of those on the SOCOM. So you need a specially threaded suppressor for the Tactical. If I get the 45f with my own threaded barrel, I can get it threaded like the SOCOM.

In the end I will probably get the Tactical, get the KAC suppressor for it and get rid of those ugly sites on the tactical.
