Which hangun?

I'm one of those paranoid folks who doesn't think the freedom to just walk into a gunstore and purchase handguns (Semi's) will be around much longer. I am therefore outfitting my 7 month old son with guns he'll probably not be able to purchase otherwise. I need help on the handgun side, but the rifle he's getting is a Bulgarian SLR, and I'm also getting him an E. German Makarov since they're cheap, and reliable. I personally love my Beretta, and wouldn't trade it for anything. It is accurate, dependable, and I love their politics lately. What I need to know is if I'm buying a gun for my son, and need somthing that is dependable as sunrise, what should I look for? My gunsmith loves the 1911's due mostly because they've had almost a hundred years to work out the bugs, and the fact that they are very "pointable" guns. I don't want to purchase a .45 though, and will limit my purchase to .40. His suggestion was Glock, but that still is fairly broad. I want to keep it under 600 bucks, and I want the gun in .40 S&W. Should I get a Glock, or Beretta, or maybe some other gun?

Glock 23, skip the night sights, under $500.
Also buy six new 10 round mags in addition to the two that come with the gun.

Glock 23, Steyr M40- I would get either one, both reliable and can be had for $460-$490- then you can spend the extra bill on ammo or whatever else.

There are other choices too, but I'll let some other folks comment.

KJM, if I were doing it with an eye towards my seven month olds gun I'd not purchase it at my dealer (4473/NIC's). I'd purchase it from a private individual, which I believe is still legal in TX.
Mind you I'm not suggesting an unlawful purchase. Simply that if it is legal in your state to purchase from an individual without the paper work I'd do so.
I'm the paranoid type to.

We live in a time in which attitudes and deeds once respected as courageous and honorable are now scorned as being antiquated and subversive.

Nothing against .40, I love the .40, and both my carry guns are in .40. But if you are paranoid about the avalibility of guns in the future you should think about ammo as well. Not being a smart a** here, just thinking along the same lines. Perhapes a military round would be a better choice. Guarenteed to be there in 20 years.

kjm; I had a Browning HP in .40 cal. It was a really nice pistol. They seem to be quite pricy now however. I've owned a Beretta Centurian in .40 cal. Absolutely awesome pistol. But what the heck, try something different this time around. Get the Glock 23! Regards, j.s.

I concur with the post suggesting a military round. If you are new to the shooting world, the 9mm is not a bad choice. I have had experiences with the 9,40 and 45 and I can tell you, if you are leaning to the larger caliber, go forward with the 45. BTW, the Ruger P90 can be had for $325.00 new and it is an incredible value. As for me, I like the 9mm due to the economics and the fact that there will always be an infinite amount of ammo hanging around. Besides, I shoot it better than any other caliber.

.223 in rifle and I believe the military sidearm is 9mm, correct? Looks like the military will be using the .223 for quite some time, I have no idea about the 9mm though. Personally, I like my .45 and the 1911 has so many parts out there for it on the civilian market. As for high capacity magazines, the 20 and 30 round AR-15 mags are probably the most plentiful. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
