Ok, I plan on taking a defensive handgun class this year. Some possibilities include Mas Ayoob's LFI-1, John Farnam's Defensive Handgun, Insights Trainings Defensive Handgun, Randy Cain's Tactical Handgun, or Chuck Taylor's Tactical Handgun. Would love to goto Thunder Ranch, but the travel expenses and cost of that course would not be that convenient for me this year. Any suggestions, and why? Thanks!

It depends on what you are looking for. LFI-1 is more about the legal aspects to judicious use of deadly force than it is about shooting skill. Shooting is taught but it isn't as intensive as Thunder Ranch. As an LFI graduate you get Mas' uncompromising support if you are ever charged in a justified (in his opinion) shooting. He will testify on your behalf at no charge (he normally charges $1000/day for testifying) and will coordinate your defense for a negotiated rate. For $700 that kind of legal assistance can't be beat.

If you are looking to develop your shooting skills then one of the other classes may be more in your line. Personally, I'd do both. If you think you may ever need to use a firearm in defense of yourself, take LFI-1. Then you can take LFI-2 or one of the other schools for fine tuning your shooting skills.

Mas teaches LFI all over the country. Check out the class schedule at www.ayoob.com. He may have a course scheduled very near to where you live.

I've talked to a few people who have attended Chuck Taylor's classes, and there's a consensus that they consist of a lot of listening to his war stories. Can't confirm this myself, but do your research before committing the kind of money these classes call for.

I've only had the chance to take one class so far. It was Randy Cain's Tactical Handgun Class. I learned more in three days than I ever though possible. And I was very impressed with Randy's teaching ability. I highly recommend him!

PS I'm a teacher/coach, and I have a very low tolerance for poor teaching!

As one of the posters above mentioned, LFI-1 spends much of its time discussing the legal and ethical issues of deadly force, including what to do after a confrontation. LFI-1 is not a shooting academy, like Blackwater Lodge or Gunsite.

Nevertheless, my shooting improved significantly at LFI-1.

I'd certainly recommend LFI-1 as an initial course. Then you can either take LFI-2 or go to a shooting academy the following year.

Contact Brian Bilbly and see if he has any openings left for Ken Hackathorns class.I think you will be extremely satisfied.Ken classes are TOP NOTCH.BILLG

shamster, i also live in NJ and i'm also considering taking one of those defensive pistol classes.

i'm considering Com-Tac and Blackwater. I've been told the facilities at Blackwater are excellent and i hope to go some time around this summer.

I want to check out Black Water. Sounds like a nice place and good training. Hope to go this year sometime.

BillG,
I did contact Brian about the Hackathorn class, and am getting more info on it. Thanks for the tip. I forgot about that.

Russell,
Maybe we can organize a good class here in NJ. Some of them are willing to travel to places where there is a demand.

i would love to help organize or just go to any pistol class around here.

however i don't know of many people that would like to take the class and i don't know of anywhere that would be a good place to have the class.

if you have any ideas i'm open to them because that would be great to take a class around here instead of taking something like an 8 hour drive to one.

I too, would like a good class around here without the extra cost of long distance travel expenses.
We can always spread the word around these various message boards. Plus I have a few contacts who can maybe help spread the news as well.
