Which Glock .45 ACP to get?

I've been thinking for a while to get a pistol to complement a .45 ACP Redhawk revolver I have. I thought about getting another Ruger .45, be it the SR45, American, or the old P series, but decided against them along with almost every other .45.

I thought about the Hi-Point, because it's cheap and I've never shot a Hi-Point, but then I found out that the Glock 21 or Glock 30 can be converted to also shoot 10mm Auto. I have this affinity to guns that can shoot more than one cartridge and the Glock is the easiest to convert, so this is why I'm choosing Glock.

I have two questions:

1. Should I buy a 10mm Glock and convert it to .45 or buy a .45 Glock and convert it to 10mm Auto? I can get my hands on used Glock 21's or 30's for $400-ish, but the 20 and 29's I may as well buy brand new, because there's not much of a used market for them.

2. Should I get the full size 20/21 or the smaller 29/30? My intended use is mostly as a range gun, but it will have a home defense role and possibly be used for some carrying, both open and concealed. I prefer a longer sight radius, but the difference between the two doesn't seem like much. The shorter grip appeals to me because I can always use the longer magazines and an X-Grip to make a full grip for better shooting, but use the smaller mags for better concealing.

I've owned all of those Glock calibers and models mentioned in the first post.

I don't have them all now. I've only kept the 30S and the 29, both being the SF version. That Short Frame design just makes them fit my hand so nicely. The 20 and 21 were also SF guns, which is the only way I would buy them.

The 30S has the slim slide of the 36 with the double stack frame. There are 9 and 10-round magazines for it, for concealment, and as you mentioned you can go to the larger 13-round magazines.

I have a holster for the 30S but not the 29, so you know which is my favorite.

I have a 30. It's very accurate and the grip is good for my hand size. The 22 was a tad too big.

I have owned the 21, 30 and 36.

The 30 has a decent capacity and it has been very accurate for its design. If you have smaller hands or want to conceal then the 30SF or 30S is a better option.

But, now that I have a Glock 34 MOS, I'd really love to have a 41 MOS. But I'll keep it to wanting it, than needing it. I have the 17, 19 MOS, 30, 34, 42. But I'm about to get rid of my 17 and 42 if the deals follow through in the next week.

You cant convert a 10mm glock to .45 without a complete new slide. So really you're better off going .45 to 10mm. I have a 21 and 30sf. For me, the 21 isn't much harder to conceal, and is certainly a better range gun, for me at least.

The 30 is no slouch eather though. My only gripe with the 30 is it doesn't feed swc bullets, but if you don't reload or somehow shoot swc profiled bullets, the 30 is a great choice.

The G21 was my first Glock. Accurate and a pretty soft shooter. I also have a G30s. Very accurate but not as much fun to shoot. Probably more accurate than the G21 but for me, it is a handful to shoot.

I've had a couple 21 sf's, a 30 and a 30s,I still have the 30s.
I'm not a big guy but I find it to be a perfect carry size with the 10 rnd mag, It's slightly larger than the 26 and slightly smaller than my 19.comes in just a tish over 30oz loaded which is about the same as the loaded 19.

The G30 is an awesome choice. I've had three. The one I have know I'm keeping cause I've made my decision and I'm keeping it and soon will get it a brother G21. Both of them are the sf version. The sf version corrects the problem of grip position I had with the first one. And they are accurate.

A lot of love for the Glock 30 here and also elsewhere I've read. What does the Glock 30 do over the 21 that makes it so good besides being smaller?

Well besides the Glock 30 being smaller and easier to conceal that the 21, its the grip size for me. The 21 does not fit my hand at all, but the 30, 30sf, 30 gen 4 fit it perfectly. I think it has to do with the 21's full grip hump. Also, if you get a 30S, you cannot use other 30 barrels in it because the slide is smaller internally. So get a 30 gen 3/4 or the SF for barrel/caliber swapping.

The gen 4 21 is one of the finest 45s out there, in my opinion.

The 30 and 30S are nice (you cannot conver the 30s to 10mm, btw) but I find with high power loads the gap between the mag and shortened grip pinches the crap out of my pinky. Not intolerable, but annoying.

My bedside and occasional carry gun is a Glock 21, Gen 4.

In addition to 10mm and .45 super, you can also get a kit to conver the 21 (and 30, I think) to .460 rowland. Because who doesnt want near .44 mag power in an autoloader?

Glock 30S is an awesome choice...... If you have or want to ever get a G26, The G30S will fit most of the same holsters....... I have both and that is nice to be able to do...!

I have a 30 in front of me now that has a lone wolf extended ported barrel, and a 21 mag with X-Grip. Nice carry package! I also have the 20 and 21 I keep around the house.

I'm not much into swapping barrels and calibers can't offer which is the best way to go there, buy em both!

...Should I buy a 10mm Glock and convert it to .45...

If you want a great conversion setup for a full size Glock, get a G-20 and a .40S&W conversion barrel from any number of aftermarket sources. I know that the .40S&W conversion barrel from KKM for the Glock 20 is a nice setup.

Was at my lgs today and I handled both the 21 and 30, both SF and non-SF frames. I did feel a difference between the SF and standard frames, but I didn't have a preference for either one. The SF models dug deeper into the web of my hand, but I don't think it would make much difference unless I was shooting super hot ammo.

Also got my hands on the Glock model 40, nice long target gun, but can't go to .45 ACP without changing the slide.

I tell you folks what: I liked the Glock 30 and I think it's a great choice for .45 ACP... for 10mm, not so much. So, I'm having this silly idea that if I get the 30, I'd fully replace the short slide with a longer one along the lines of a Glock 34/35 length, that way I have the shorter, but still decent grip for better carrying, but the longer sight radius and barrel for the 10mm cartridge.

Can I do that?

Don't know of a way to put a longer slide on a 30 frame. You'd have to buy a 21 and chop the grip down to 30 dimensions.

No, you can't do that. What you would have to do is purchase a 21 or 41 and chop the grip to 30 size.

I have thought about trying it a time or two myself.

Edit: guess my screen didnt update... for an hour.

If shortening the grip is the only way, then I'll go that route.

What's the best method for shortening a polymer frame and making it look not look like a hack job?
