Which for concealed carry (Glock 19 or Sig 229)?

I'm really confused as to which handgun I should choose for concealed carry. I've narrowed down the competition to either the Glock 19 or the Sig 229. I like .40 S&W, and was ready to get a Glock 23, but started seeing a lot of traffic on the web about the KB! factor in Glock's larger caliber handguns. Since I reload, I figure that the Glock .40 could be a potentially dangerous choice (at least without a barrel upgrade). I've read that the Glock 9mm pistols don't tend to have this problem (I guess because the 9mm doesn't build up as much pressure in the partially unsupported chamber) and that they are the superior choice in caliber for a Glock. A friend of mine has a Sig 226 in .40 and likes it a lot. I admit that Sig pistols are pretty awesome, but my only reservation is that the blued finish won't stand up to extended holster wear, whereas the Glock's combination of polymer and tenifer coating would stand up to more abuse. If I buy the P229, I'll probably keep it stock (might change the grips, though). However, if I buy the glock I'll probably install a bar-sto barrel, Novak sights, and replace the guide rod and spring, plus I might try to scrounge up a pre-ban mag or two. I know that this has been pretty long-winded, but if any of you can provide me with your own personal experiences, I would be grateful. Thanks!

The most important thing is how a pistol fits your hand, how it balances, and whether it points naturally. If both the Glock 19 and SIG Sauer P229 are equal in these respects for you then consider mechanisms, they're very different. The SIG Sauer P229 is DA/SA while the Glock 19 is the so-called Safe-Action. I prefer the former, I never could get used to the Glock trigger. Rust isn't an issue because of the P229's stainless steel slide. If you take care of a pistol, unless you're swimming in salt water with it strapped on, rust shouldn't be an issue.

Both are fine pistols, but I'd take the SIG Sauer because they've always been more reliable and more accurate in my experience.

Its just going to come down to personal preference. Both Tecolate and myself were in the same boat. We each had both the Glock 19 and the Sig P228. He chose the Sig, and I chose the Glock. I sold my P228 and he sold his G19. They are both excellent handguns.

the sig 229 is a great gun and i was thinking of getting one myself some day but i would never use it for CC. i held one the other day and was confused as to why its in the concealment catagory of gun sizes. its HUGE. it weighs alot and has a pretty big grip which is the hardest part to conceal. i have a S&W 669 and it's smaller than the 229 and i can't carry it concealed. i have tried many holsters and none work.

if you really like the .40 and want a glock then get the 23. there are several things you can do to stop it from kbing.
1. don't reload each case more than a few times. alot of kbs happen from cases loaded around 10 times.
2. be very careful not to put too much powder in and over charge a case.
3. get a .357sig or 9mm barrel for the gun to practice with and carry factory ammo. (you can buy a 9mm conversion barrel for a .40 gun. its possible so just don't argue with me on this one like everyone else does).
4. get a fully supported after market barrel.
these things will stop a kb in most cases. also you could get a glock 32. same size as 23/19 but in .357sig. besides .357sig is a better round with more stopping power than the .40.

also you should remember that a kb can happen in any gun and only happens in glock more because 1. people make a bigger deal of it when it happens in a glock. 2. there are more glocks out there so a bigger chance of it happening. the non fully supported chamber of the .40 barrel does increase the chances but if you're very careful then you'll most likely be fine.

the compact glock (19/23/32) is a much easier gun to conceal than a 229. its thiner, shorter, has a smaller grip, and lighter.

The SIG Sauer P229 isn't huge. Stand one side by side nest to Glock and you'll notice it's only a tad taller. It's the same length from muzzle to hammer tip, if you discount the hammer the P229 is actually shorter than a Glock 23. The P229 is 8 ozs heavier, and this to me is no big deal. Like I said, better to have a pistol that fits well, balances, and points naturally than one that doesn't.

Like Allen says, it comes down to personal preference. You can't know until you get a chance to shoot both side by side.

My vote is on the Glock 19. It is light weight, extremely durable and very accurate. Also it is about $250 to $300 less than the SIG P229. Note that I am not saying the P229 is not a great pistol because I also own one. But you stated your primary purpose is conceal carry and the G19 is a smaller package with great performance.

While I think all three are great pistols, I would recommend the Glock 23 for CC. For me the pistol points perfectly, is small and light enough for carry, and is chambered in a great cartridge. Also, it has only one trigger pull, and that is a short and fairly light pull, but can be altered to fit your taste. I also believe that the KB! stories about glocks are overblown. Yes they can happen, but if you pay attention to your loading you can avoid the problem. Just remember to check your brass for damage, and don't try to turn your 40 into a 10mm.

I have both the SIG229 and GLOCK 19. The Sig was my first.I carried it in inside the waist, and outside the waist holsters. The GLOCK is less prone to damage, rust, and is easy to clean and maintain. The SIG holsters fit my GLOCK just fine.I like the SIG a lot.IT was with me when I needed it.The 40 SIG is a little harder to shoot because of the extra snap of the 40.I have not carried the SIG since I started carrying the GLOCK.Buy them both if you can.You will be as confused as I now am.

I have a P229 and a Glock 22 and I would choose the Glock for carry for a couple reasons. First, I shoot better with the Glock, and second, I don't worry too much about finish wear on the Glock. When you spend $700 or more on a sidearm, its pretty upsetting to see it lose its finish. I would rather spend $500 on a Glock which is in no way inferior to the SIG, and use that as my workhorse gun. Although the P229 seems to point better, for some reason it just isn't quite as accurate as the Glock (in my hands). As for the full capacity mags, get em as soon as you can. I bought a like-new metal-lined full cap for my G22 today and it set me back $100 and the prices just keep rising.

Concealed carry in smallest package = Glock 26, then Glock 30 in 45 acp (easy to reload for, then Glock 19.

I have a Sig P226 and just sold a P220 and will tell you that the Sig's finish just won't hold up to daily concealed carry. I loved mine but carry my G26 or G30.

Greetings To All; I know that Tecolote is
going to flame me for this, because I'm
a big fan of Sig's. But, I will have to take
one for the team; because I would choose the
Glock's (23 or 27) over the Sig P229 for CCW.
You ask why? Remember, you just stated the
229 is 8 ounces heavier!!! And also,
because to the Tennifer finish; as I believe
it is a lot more durable. :D I can learn to
live with the "Safe Action" trigger. :)

Best Wishes,

GLOCK
No thumb safety to miss
No exposed hammer to catch on clothing
No DA/SA switch in trigger pull
You wont cry when you scratch it
It will be your workhorse.

PS- The KB's all seem reload related. When a reloader screws up and overcharges or deep sets a round and the gun does'nt take it, why do they blame the gun?

Ala Dan,

I would never flame a fellow car carrying memeber of the SIG Sauer team.

I've always said that each person should carry what works best for them. Hence the importance of trying before buying.

P229 is a bit too big for CCW unless your holster holds it tilted way too forward. Glock 23 would be a better choice overall, but personally, I would recommend neither.

Sig 239 in either .40 or .357 is a great choice, IMHO.

The G19 is a modern classic. A work of art. Lusted for by gun lovers the world over. Sorry, got a little carried away. Got into my sensitive side with another post. :) Doesn't get much better then the G19 for a 9mm for durability and function. Now russle92 has a good thought on the G32. The sig .357 is getting quite a following in the law enforcement community it seems. I'm holding out for the G36, because I'm told it feels and carries like the G19, only it is in .45. We shall see.

I want to thank everyone for their input on this topic. Let's face it, they're both great guns. Therefore, it basically comes down to personal preference. Right now I'm leaning towards the mid-size Glock (19,23, or the .357 sig version). I've fired ~100 or so rounds through a friends Glock 27, but I found it to be too small for my hands (even with an extended grip on the magazine). I've chosen the Glock for concealed carry because of 1. reputation for reliability 2. I think it will handle holster wear better than the Sig 3. The Glock is a little bit lighter (and smaller) 4. Consistent trigger pull for all shots fired. As for the KB! factor, I'll probably replace the barrel with an aftermarket version (Bar-sto or Jarvis) regardless of the caliber I choose. This in no way bashes Sigs (my friend has one and loves it). In fact I've shot it and liked it a lot also. To each his (or her) own. They're both great firearms. Thanks everyone for your help.
