Which camo should I use?

I plan on going hunting again soon but I realize my old USMC woodland bdu's no longer fit. I guess I am just a fat lazy nasty now.

Anyway I need to buy some new ones and have decided on either woodland digital or multicam.

I will be hunting mainly in Georgia/Florida and in some swampy areas.

Which should I get? Woodland digital or multicam? I know most people here use some type of mossy oak or some such. I really like the versatility of military camoflauge.

Deer? Rifle hunting? You don't need camo. Any old Goodwill earth tone stuff will do. Heck, blue jeans haven't been a problem for me. Deer don't see colors; only shiny stuff or very light hues bother them.

Turkey? I'd probably use any old camo that sorta fit my hunt-area vegetation. But, if you can really sit still for long periods, back to the dull earth tones.

Art - what do you mean? Everyone knows no deer or turkey were ever killed before they came up with photo-realistic cammo that costs as much as a new rifle...

Super-Dave, I look for anything that is more light than dark. If you are tucked into the shade, it is plenty dark, but if you are in the open I think the dark cammo stands out. My next choice in patterns is the Cabela's Outfitter pattern - just light brown with some darker brown lines.

I spent too long wearing BDUs for a living to want to wear them while having fun....

Thats the one.

We bow hunt elk in Western Oregon on the coast and it is thick and green, but some patterns, even in that type of terrain, end up looking like a black blob.

I also like the look of ASAT cammo, but it is harder to find. One of the guys where we hunt wears it alot.

For the most part, Deer are color blind. No camo is necessary, just dont wear anything with too much contrast, or the color white.

+1 on the blue jeans.

I've always wondered if the proper Gulf Coast camo should be a combination of pink and lavender to match the azalea and camilia flowers? :D

Any camo will work. It simply breaks up your pattern and as the men said, blue jeans will work in a pinch too. I admit, I wear Mossy Oak, but I wear it in the woods of Kentucky and the plains of Wyoming with good results.

I tend to agree with Art on this. I haven't hunted much but have followed animals a bit and played paintball. The animals always seemed to hear me before they saw me. From playing paintball I have to say earth tones seem to work as well as camo. Most people with the crazy digital camo seem to move around a lot not realizing how it works. The jumpsuits work great for keeping whatever is underneath clean if you need to go somewhere afterwards though.
So who hunts with camo and who just goes with earth tones?

All around camo

Dave, Go to wallyworld or wherever and get a set of Realtree AP, HD and your set forever no matter where you hunt it will blend in. Its Also good for either ground or treestand hunting. Its the best pattern for the 3 states I hunt in and they say it works everywhere. Dont get the military digital stuff for hunting because they dont have any trees with square leaves in the woods.lol The woodland camo still works believe it or not. Its a good classic pattern that has proven itself.

superdave,
i use the older woodland BDU pattern. the realtree brand camo at walmart i thought about trying it. in jam. or feb. they put alot of it on sale. very low price too. they didn't have my size when i saw the sale was going on. so i got a set for 2 of my sons. i'll wait and get it on sale next time. but for now the BDU's are working fine

johnwilliamson,
my father in law just uses brown coveralls (carhartt) for deer hunts. no camo,no bluejeans. and has seen a number of deer and killed atleast 3. 2 of them drive hunting with a club. he has a blaze orange coat and heavy trousers set now. he is really visible with that on.

Rem870, Dont think I would want to wear any brown at all during the Jersey deer season. Too many yahoos in the woods that dont have a clue. And NJ has the 200 Sq.In of orange law for all gun hunting but alot of guys I have seen take it off in the woods for some dumb reason. Even on private property you still have guys that sneak in and I wouldnt take the chance of some dummy thinking I was a deer and taking a pot shot at me. Good to hear that he uses an orange coat and pants now. SuperDave, I think its more important to use a good cover scent than camo. I have had deer 5 yds from me with blaze orange on and didnt know what I was because I had my face and eyes hidden well and used a good cover scent. On the other hand, I was Bowhunting one day without spraying myself down and had deer snorting at me from 100 yds away and I know they couldnt see me. Its a good thing to blend in but scent elimination and staying downwind are one of the keys to success.

to the OP, just go trade in your now "smaller" BDu's at the local thrift store for a size or two larger. I still use my BDU's and DCU's with great success. I see no need to spend hundreds of dollars on "fancy flage" when I have taken many deer with my bdu's or even (gasp) blue jeans and a red and black flannel shirt:eek: I guess the deer where I hunt never got the memo that they can't be stalked and shot if the hunter isn't wearing the super silent scent resistant digitized camo fleece wonder suits that have to cost at least as much or more than your monthly house payment :D

Only thing I spend the bucks on is a good pair of boots and socks and I admit I spluge on a booney hat once in a while, but at $10-20 a hat who cares.

if i recall right mike this was years ago before the 200 sq. inch law/regulation came into effect. the blaze orange coat and trousers he bought at an auction about 3 years ago. i guess he used to just wear a blaze orange hat. back when he wore the brown carhartts. never hunted with him or even knew him then. i wear a blaze orange hat and a vest. except waterfowl and bow hunting. hell the funny thing is that dad and i dress alike while hunting, except our boots. other than that we look like twins. but one is a little wider than the other :). ( dad is not fat. just a big man).

LOL, Twins. My G-pa still has his red Woolrich coat from the 50's and I think that was standard for the oldtimers back then(and still is). I still have mine from when I started hunting but I always wore an Orange hat and vest over it. I used to wear the minimum orange but that changed a few years back when I had a few buckshot pellets hit the trees around me and now its a full jacket and hat. I caught 3 guys last year sneaking in the back side of our property during doe day. They were all dressed head to toe in camo. After i asked them to get out I asked why they would be so stupid to wear camo during deer season and they said so the people couldnt see them. I let them know their an accident waiting to happen when someone starts shooting at a deer and cant see them or think they are a deer and the unfortunate happens.
SUPER-DAVE, Did you get my pm?

i also hunt Florida, i find that Realtree APG works best in my area. i chose it due to the openess of the pattern. the purpose of camo is to break up the human sillouete (sp?) as someone mentioned earlier. i'm not saying you can't be successful hunting in bluejeans and a brown shirt BUT i am saying i bet you get "busted" by deer more than i do...

If your eye says its good, its good.To me,more important,is it comfortable in your conditions?,hot, cold, wet, dry?? And,is it quiet.

comfortable is also important as mentioned. being a Florida hunter, i use the Micro Lite camo that Bass Pro sells. it's ultra light and breathable which is a must when you hunt in 100 degree weather.
