Which Caliber for a new rifle?

I have the itch for another rifle but can't decide
I have a 22lr,.223,.243 and 30-06. I hunt eastern whitetail deer and would like to go out west someday and hunt elk. I also target shoot too. What would recommend.

Thanks

Well, you maybe have a half a hole between the .243 and the '06. Personally, I've never felt the need to fill that same hole in my own inventory. Aw, there've been the occasional .308s or .257 Roberts sort of stuff; but they were more "instead of", rather than "as well as".

Particularly if you handload, you might consider the 7X57 or the 7mm-08. Bullet weight and energy lie right in between the .243 and the '06. Generally, you don't have a lot of use for stuff like the .25-'06 or a .264/7mm Magnum.

Dunno what kind of .22 you have, but an upgrade there is never a bad thing. .22 tack-drivers are Good Things.

new rifle?

Get a .45/70,It works for every purpose, from mice to elephants.Fun to load for and when you see those big 500 gr.bullets pop out of the mold you'll be hooked for life.

Seems to me you got it covered from the small end. I would suggest a .35 Whelen for larger game. Unless you want a bellerin' snortin' powder hoggin' magnum.

Dang it, R-Rider. You beat me to it.

From the looks of your collection, you need to begin the trek into the medium calibers.

.338 or a .35 as suggested above.

The .45-70, especially in a period-copy is really fun. I don't own one but I have shot my share of black powder and smokeless version. Both give a uniquely satisfying low-speed WHUMP to the shoulder when shot.

Art Eatman, that's what I think!

RDF, I live in Colorado, and a .30-06 is quite capable of taking elk within reasonable ranges if the shooter will do his part.

Even though I have no real use for another non-surplus centerfire bolt-action rifle (my .30-06 and .223 are enough) I'd still like to someday, when (if!) I have filled all of my other gun wishes, get a 7-08 Rem. Maybe I'll look at the new Rem. 710 (I THINK that's the model number) if/when they offer it in 7-08. I believe that would bridge the gap (not that it really needs to be bridged--the '06 can be handloaded for an amazing variety of jobs) between my two aforementioned rifles. But the 7-08 is what I'd choose if I bought a new BA rifle.

Best of luck to you, RDF, with whatever you choose.

Well your bound to get many different answers.I have very little experience with which caliber may be best etc.I'm sure alot of opinions will be to go with tried and true favorites in which you can find ammo in any corner store for, like 308. 30-06 etc.I found the Remington 260 caliber to be a very pleasant round to shoot. It has also gotten some excellent reviews. It is supposed to be the american version of the 6.5x55 swede round which is held in high regard among many shooters.I usually don't get involved with any odd,or new calibers, but this one had me intriqued.I enjoyed shooting my rifle in this caliber on the range. You might want to take this caliber into consideration.
