Out of the SARs, which caliber would be the best to get. Price of mags and ammo availability are the biggest issues.

7.62x39 without a doubt. You can still get standard capacity mags for a little over $10 and ammo is $2/20.

5.45x39 would probably be next in line.

7.62x39 is the way to go, mag's for $6.99 and ammo 1000 rd's for $76.00 man, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR ? up off your ass man and get to the phone and place your order. Put on a black buggy stock and your ready to rock. What more info do you need man? {opps, i am sorry, i forgot i'm not over at assault web} Stay away from the SAR3, bad, bad gun.

I agree, 7.62x39 for the reasons stated. Also (if you need more), it is a legal and decent deer hunting cartridge (nearly equal to a 30/30), unlike the .22s.

I don't think any of these rifles are designed for great long-range accuracy, so why go for a small caliber, high velocity cartridge? I could understand it if you were getting a full-auto AK (smaller caliber would probably be more controllable), but for a semi-auto, I'd stick with the 7.62x39 for the cheap ammo, cheap mags, and other advantages.

By the way, I took my own advice and bought two SAR-1s and a bunch of magazines (including 75-round drums - yet another reason to go with the 7.62) last year. I enjoy these rifles a lot.

7.62X39 is best for price of mags and ammo availability

I agree with the 7.62 x 39 choice. It's a good economical choice and is a fun caliber to shoot, especially out of an AK.

If I had a choice to go shoot 500 rounds of either a .223 or 7.62 x 39 right now, it would be the latter.

I agree with everyone on the 7.62. Ammo is dirt cheap.

where can I get decent hi cap mags at a real good price?

Thanks!

CDNN (cdnninvestments.com, i think) has a 4 pack of new Bulgarian steel 30 rounders with carrying case for $44. They also have 40rd Chinese ones for $20 or so.

As krept suggested, CDNN is a good place for mags AND ammo. It sells brass-cased South African 7.62x39mm ammo.

Progressivearms.com is a great place for buying the rare Bulgarian waffle (polymer) mags. These typically go for $40-$100, but somehow Progressive is selling them for $15 or so. I have four and they are great mags.

I think Progressive is selling Bulgarian steel ribbed mags around $8 or so.

ammoman.com is a great place to buy and comes very highly recommended.

Hope that helps.
