Which auto pistol is a good CCW ankle carry?

I have been wanting a pistol to carry on my ankle and have been in a delima over size. I don't want something too small, but I know carrying a compact glock would be bulky. I am trying to conceal and not make it look like I have a crazy ankle brace. I wear normal fitting jeans/slacks and some loose fit Levis. I am trying to stay between .32 and 9mm caliber. I just don't see many people talking about carrying in this area. Also Who makes good ankle holster's?

Walther PPK

I'd recommend a 9mm or better for an ankle gun. You need the extra recoil and usually more sophisticated mechanism that comes with the cartridge to overcome the lint/mud/debris that will get into the weapon during routine carry. A lot of smaller caliber weapons will jam in this same environment.

Look at a Kahr 9mm or .40 polymer (P9, P9 Covert, P40, P40 Cover) for maximum concealment and comfort. The "baby" Glocks are good too but a bit more bulky.

I have been carrying a Kahr P9 Covert in an Alessi ankle holster and have really come to like this combo alot. I carried a J frame S&W for over 20 years in an Alessi ankle holster and have recently switched over to the Kahr. There doesn't seem to be any difference in concealability or weight. Now I have a 7 shot gun as a back up. It's not alot more, but it something and the Kahr is a sweetheart to shoot! I wear straight legged jeans to work everyday and there's no problem with concealability. I tried a Glock 27 but found it not nearly a concealable as thie set up.

Mantis,

Depends on how big you are. A PPK or P-11, P9, etc., can easily run on the ankle of big guys, and the lighter P-11 won't even be that uncomfortable for 10+1 of 9mm.

"Average" guys might find the size and weight of even a P-11 (small and light for a 9) bothersome after a few hours, and if it's a 10 hour carry day after day, year after year, you might risk some permanent objections from your body.

"Small" guys better stick with P-32s (tiny and featherweight in .32 ACP), but all sizes tend to love the total comfort an adequate rig provides with it.

There are many ankle rigs available, and odds are that there's only ONE you'll be able to stand. Same way with an ankle carry gun.

Overall size and weight are the critical features of the gun. The heavier the gun, the heavier the rig has to be to carry it.

The smaller and lighter the better for an ankle carry gun. Remember, even heavier (by a couple of ounces or so) shoes can really fatigue you after a day of wearing them. There's just something about swinging around extra weight on your ankle that gets really aggravating after a few hours!

You can simulate how you're going to do by making a comfortable ankle weight of about what the gun and rig is going to weigh, and wearing that around all day for a few days.

All I'm sure of regarding ankle carry is that if you don't stay within the parameters of what your body will tolerate, you either won't wear the rig or you'll be grumpy and hard to get along with all day.

Choose well! :D

There may be some debate over the best gun, but I believe that the hands down winner for a holster is the Galco Ankle Glove (or similar one from Desantis; I believe they're made in the same factory). My favorite ankle auto is the PPK. My Kel-Tec P11 is a more powerful gun, but I haven't found a really comfortable ankle holster for it (Please, Galco, MAKE ONE FOR ME!!!).

Why not go all the way and carry a Glock 36??? I carry mine in a Fobus GL-4 ankle rig. :D There is now no reason to carry anything less than .45ACP!!

As someone else said, much depends upon the individual person and/or type of holster.

I got hooked on lightweight J-frames for ankle holsters and have been quite disappointed when experimenting with several semi-autos - just too darn heavy! I tried a K-9 and Baby Glocks over the years, but get irratible before getting thru the day. Bought a Glock 36 as soon as it was available popped for Fobus ankle holster a possible option, thinking that might be the answer. That set-up only lasted until noon. I don't see how some of the guys can stand it with such beasts! But then, I notice the difference within the first few minutes between a 12-ounce 340 and a 15-ounce 638 ...

I have a hard time suggesting anything less than 9mm in a semi-auto for personal defense, especially with so many of 'em out there the same size or even smaller than many .380s. If I were to personally get serious about a semi-auto ankle gun, the first product line (and likely the last) that I would consider is the Kahr polymer frames.

If you go to the Kahr website you'll see they sell the renegade ankle holster for it...I have one for my j-frame and it is the only ankle holster I can wear over combat boots with straight leg jeans....just can't do that with a molded leather holster like the alessi or the galco...although they are excellent designs and great for flared pants...

for a better pic of it, go to

and that strap in the picture is only for putting the gun in...you just pull it through with a good yank....very comfortable and the elastic breathes better than the neoprene band on the galco which can get very hot in the summer months....

Well, I have decent calvs (sp?) from years of sports as a kid and weightlifting. I have been leaning twords a PPK, but wanted to know of other options. I well definately look into the Kahr pistols. Looks like I will just have to try it out and see what works best.

Ken, I was looking at the Kahr pistol. I haven't looked into revolvers. I am trying to stay with an auto pistol.

I carried a PPK almost daily for over four years - - -

- - -In an ankle holster. It was 'WAY too heavy for the purpose but I persevered. Finally got an Airweight Chief's Special and went with it. The Model 37 seems to have migrated, to serve as backup piece for a young police officer, and I'm mostly using a Colt Agent. I do love the little alloy revolvers - - -But the KT P32 is very useful, too.

There's a lot of difference in "packing" an ankle gun for a few hours every week or two, and using one for an Always Gun.:p

Best,
Johnny

Kahr MK40, actually for me its boot carry, a IWB clip holster in the top of a leather lace-up boot, works great, you forget its there. Prints a little with tight cuff jeans, none with boot cut. Nobody notices it either way.

I carried a stainless Walther PPK for years in an ankle holster. When Kahr brought out the MK9 it replaced the Walther. Same size and a full 9mm. I use the Alessi Ankle Holster.
