Which "assault weapon?"

Just doing some "California dreaming" in case the ban really does get lifted.

Which would you choose and why:

AR-15

Mp5

Mac-10

Thanks!

I'd take an M16 since I already have a 9mm subgun.
I'm thinking of buying a FA rifle now, but since I live in a C&R state I'd have to get an AR18. Prices on those have really spiked recently too.

C&R stands for Curio & Relic.
Some rifles, handguns, shotguns, and full auto weapons are listed by the BATF on the C&R list. Those with a C&R License can buy the non FA guns across state lines, in most cases, and have them shipped right to the door. They can also own FA guns in those quaint states that only allow their peasantry to own Curio & Relic full autos.

AR18 a full auto rifle chambered for the .223. It was made so developing countries could build it without a lot of investment in fancy, expensive tooling. The semi auto version is the AR180, and a newly made semi-auto the AR180B is now available. There are some threads about it on TFL.

I shot an AR18 at Gun Fair in Princeton, Minnesota once. Fun, about the same size as the M16, but felt different. I should have started buying one then. I had just finished buying three subguns over a two year period and was broke and suffering the effects of "domestic warming," at the time.

Aren't the AR-15 and M-16 chambered in .223? And aren't there variants of each that are full auto?

Any pics of an AR-18?

How does it compare to an AR-15?

I don't have a pic of the AR18 that I can post, but I think you can find one at www.securityarms.com.

There were a few FA rifles marked AR15 early in the rifle's history. They were .223s, as were the semiauto ARs. There were also some ARs made in .222 Remington. Some were sold through an advertiser in Shotgun News a year or three ago.

AR18s look more blocky than AR15s, and have a different gas system. I've read that instead of a direct gas system, the AR18 uses a gas piston more like an AK action. Maybe they go into that at Security Arms too.

I shot one mag in bursts from an AR18. It seemed to have more recoil than my AR15, but then mine is a semiauto. I thought the stock was less comfortable than the one on my AR15, but I think I could get used to it. I had about 50 yards worth of range to work with and big, breakable targets. I would like to try one at 100 or 200 yards with paper targets so I could see how they really shoot.

Like Jim says. AR. By changing uppers you can have a 9mm (or other pistol caliber) smg, a real assault rifle, a sniper weapon and if you've got the bucks, a belt fed MG.

Post from Gary:
and if you've got the bucks, a belt fed MG.

Oh, I forget to mention about the Shrike (www.aresdefense.com)which should be out early next year and is a belt fed upper for the AR-15/M-16. Potentially owning a belt fed item makes the M-16 the obvious choice.

I'll put my vote in for the M16 too. But I don't want just any ordinary M16. I want a Beta C mag to do some full auto with and I want an M203 to blow things up with. Now that would be a truly cool gun. Mmmmmm grenades.
