Which AR (in 223 only) for Coyotes

I thought I'd try an AR for coyotes this year. Shots will be in and around fields and woodlots, 350yards max, but most under 200 yards. I have numerous scopes, so no issues in that area.

So, which AR should I be looking for?

Do I need a 20" barrel (or longer)
Would I be better off with a heavy barrel in the AR?
Do I need a fixed stock, or would an adjustable one work just as well?

The cost won't be an issue, but I don't want to spend more than it takes for a rifle that is sufficientl in function and accuracy.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I went with the 20" Predator Pursuit. With 60 grain vmax it routinely shoots 1" groups (sometimes smaller). Is heavy . . . About 11 lbs with scope & sling.

Personally I would go with something with a shorter barrel.

I have a Colt 6724 with a Leupold 4.5 X 14 that I use sometimes on coyotes and it is not the best option.

I have gotten in the habit of carrying my Colt 6920 with an Aimpoint instead. It is lighter and easier to hold/carry and the Red dot is just as good as the more powerful magnified optic in my hunting area. The yotes usally try to sneak up down wind and stay under cover until they are pretty close. I have missed a couple of opportunities because I couldn't get that big heavy rifle turned around or find them in the scope before they got suspicious and ran off.

I am getting too old to haul all that crap around from stand to stand.:D

Now for setting up a blind across a large open field and shooting from prone, that 6724 is great not so much for hauling/moving around alot.

Coyotes don't care what brand of AR they are shot with, but I wouldn't want anything longer than an 18" barrel and no bull barrels, I carry a 16", the reason being its easier to carry in and out of scrub brush, and its light. Walking distance from stand to stand adds up, the less weight you need to carry the better.

I am building an AR rifle for just that scenario. My main concern is accuracy and light weight. I chose the 20" mid weight barrel and A3 upper from Del-ton. I added a free float handguard with sling swivel, and a YHM low profile gas block. I chose one of the polymer lowers from New Frontier Armory to save weight ( $99 for a complete lower didn't hurt either). A Bushnell 3x9x40 SF Elite scope, Burris Signature rings and an Ergo grip will round out the build. It should shoot an inch or less, which is all I need the rifle to do to be an effective coyote rifle. Entire setup including scope and rings and grip should be around $700 total. I'll have the setup out at the range by this weekend to wring it out.

Yote's

I'm with Crowhunter, I have had similar situations with my sig using a scope...I switched to a holo sight ....lot's faster putting on target especially follow up shots.

I guess it depends on where you hunt. I have some wooded areas where the yote come through openings rather quickly and I have missed out because of a scope. On the other hand I have a wide open area where shots are over 100 yards and a scope is a must.

I have been using a 16" DPMS with a Bushnell TRS-25 the last few weeks and I love it!! It is very accurate the red-dot is light and gets on target quick at night. I use Fed 55gr SGKs and they a plum wicked. Unless your shooting P-Dogs way off, I say lighter is better. Especially if you intend on doing alot of walking. that's my take on it!

I consider the 16" carbine fine out to 250 yards or so while the 20" adds another 50-75 yards. I base this on retained velocity, wind deflection, and bullet performance from each barrel length.
I use a 16" Hbar for calling, foot hunting, and carrying on the ATV but shift to a 20" Hbar for shooting at 300 yards or more.

Justa bout any would work, I pull it off with a Mini14 (gasp)

So whichever AR you like best should be ok.

I have thought about this myself. Much lighter weight than most AR available easily off the shelf.

I think it is a good choice.

i handled a new remington r15 today (sans scope, mounts, mag with ammor), and it felt like it weighed 10 lbs. i was very surprised. thanks for all the suggestions.
