Which Ammo Would You Choose?

I just made the final payment on my new Savage 10 in 7mm-08. It should be at the FFL dealer in about a week. The anticipation is killing me... In the mean time I want to pick up some ammo so I will be ready to zero it in. It makes sense to me to use the same ammo for zeroing as I will be using for hunting, but I also want to get something that will be affordable for regular target practice. I will be reloading, eventually, but in the mean time, what factory ammo would you recommend that will be a decent hunting round without draining my wallet at the range?

We've had good luck with 140gr Federal Fusions in 7mm-08. Performs good but not nearly as expensive as some of the others out there.

The Fusion is good stuff. Remington Cor Locts have probably taken more game than any other bullet out there and don't cost that much. Reloading the cartridge is definitely the best way to go and cheapest. I load and shoot a lot of 7mm08 and have found mine like the heavier bullets over the 120's. I load 150grn Nosler BT's over 45.5grns of H4350 for about 2700fps and sub .5MOA groups if I do my part.

Good luck with the new rifle, 7mm08 is probably the best whitetail round out there, it just doesn't get the recognition that it deserves.

Give us some reports on that Savage.

When I sight in a scope for the first time on a hunting rifle I usually buy a cheap box of ammo to get me pretty close at 100yds then I fine tune it with what I plan to hunt with.

Remington Core Lokts. IMO they are the best bang for the buck. I have never lost an animal that was hit with core lokts, they are reasonably accurate and they don't break the bank.

SaltyDog-I just checked the Savage website, and sure enough, it is not there anymore. It was there a couple of months ago when I put the rifle on layaway with Bud's... I guess they must have discontinued that particular model. Might explain why I got it for such a good price...

Remington Cor-Lokt has always served me well and at a very good price too boot. If I dont shoot my reloads in my hunting rifles I shoot Cor-Lokt.

I like to try several different loads to see what the rifle likes,At the same time watch for the proformance your looking for.

I get great results from the Hornady SST & Sierra gamekings.
Core lokts work good & theyre easy to find. good luck

The Savages we have shoot 140 grain CorLokts very well. I've also used some of my old stock Speer Nitrex 145 GrandSlam factory ammo through them with good results.

I am cheap by nature. New rifles for me get the cheap stuff untill it is sighted in and I have become comfortable with it. Usually by that time I have dies and bullets and start reloading. If you dont reload, then get the good stuff and dial in for hunting after getting used to the rifle.

Many have said the Remington core-lokt, and I agree. I use them as practice ammo in my 243 at half the cost of Nosler ballistic tip, and the POI and trajectory is the same out to 200 yards.

Another for core lokt.

Probably the best of the old standards in every way. Great expansion and control, great accuracy, and as far as I have evern seen, almost always compatible to the firearm. I've very rarely seen a rifle that wouldn't shoot remington factory ammo accurately.

if you chose, I'd go with a bonded or partitioned bullet when I went into the field, because I would prefer a more definite limitation to weight retention.

I was amazed at Core-Lokt shooting sub-moa out of my Tikka.
I only used it to sight in and kept the brass.
I use handloads for hunting but there is a Federal High-Energy loading with Fail-Safe bullets.
Knockin on 3000fps and a good bullet for elk.
That load might be discontinued.
Handload Barnes 120gr TSX's for game.

I just looked on Midway USA and they have some Prvi Partizan 140gr Boat-tail soft points for $16.99 a box. It has received a score of 4 out of 5 stars based on 25 reviews... I have not shot any of this ammo but I bet it will be hard to find anything cheaper for a 7mm-08.
