O.K. this 11.43x23 guy might give in and finally get a 9mm.

Which 9mm for plinking and generally burning a lot of cheap ammo?

Ahhhh, the nine millimeter. If you really are serious and want some thing you will actually carry. Get a Walther. As much as I love my G19, the Walther P99 is what I pull out to carry. (sometimes)

Another good, albeit pricy, 9mm is the Walther P5. It is a single stack 9mm that has been adapted by the Deutsch politzi. It will set you back around $900. This is what I am currently carrying. :)

If good, solid, built like a brick, and looks like one too, pistol is your thing. Get the Ruger KP95DC. Mine is dead on accurate out to 15 yards!!! This will set you back about $400.

However, if you want to brave the Dark Side, then by all means get the 17 or 19. I prefer the 19.

9mm's are very cool. :D

If your a 1911 guy!

If like most .45 acp fans you cut your teeth with a 1911, then if I were you I would go with a Hi-Power or a CZ-75 the controls are the same and they are both darn fine guns.

Sig-Sauer's -

Why not the Sig's, like the single stack P225; or the double
stack P226 or P228? I will admit, they are rather expensive;
but, a heck'va lot fun to shoot.:D They should serve your
purpose well; and can be counted on to double as a CCW.

I voted for the CZ 75. It's a great gun at a very reasonable price. It would be great for plinking, and would set you back less than $400.

If all you want to do is plink, why not an FEG Hipower clone? Mine cost about $250. Yes, I probably paid too much given market prices for the things, but I have had it now for about six years and over 3000 rounds, and I could scarcely be happier with it.

OK a little confirmation here. By "plinking", I mean that I don't plan to use this for ccw, home defense, hunting, woods defense or competitive shooting. The old 11.43x23 cartridge does most of that pretty well for me.

I do plan to use it for shooting holes in paper and cans to improve my skills with cheaper ammo than .45 and more "kick" than .22.

Besides -- the popularity of 9mm is a great excuse to get a new gun, but I have no particular use planned for it.

Thanks for your ideas! I've only shot the 9mms on the list. I know nothing about SIGs or Walthers, I'll have to check them out. I would like to stay under $500 (used is OK).

To stay under $500 then the CZ would be first followed by a Ruger or even a Taurus PT92. You can probably even find a Glock 17 or 19 for under $500 used. I have a G19 and shoot the hell out of it. Its a great gun and was my first Glock.

Glock 19

I picked up a new Glock 19 for under $500 at the gun show in March. I love it. I have never shot a CZ, but have heard only good things about them.

EAA Witness

Get an EAA witness target ported model from www.CDNNinvestments.com they were selling for $369, I love mine, and would never part with it, I've shot about 300 rounds through it and can now put 17 rounds through a 1 1/2", 2-hole group at 20 yrds with a typical 2-hand grip, no benchrest.

Had to go with the CZ75. To me , this is the best 9mm pistol out there. I know that title is suppose to go to the Sig P210, but not for the price minded. The CZ does it all, plinking, CCW, precision, tactical. You name it, it can be used in every role.

If you can afford a Browning get one. Everyone should have a Hi Power. They are getting pricey and hard to find these days. Next choice is the CZ. Very well made and the best deal for the money out there.

I did a little searching on Walthers and came up with an interesting option.

I found a 1944 Walther P38 in good shape for $575 that seems to have been brought back by a serviceman from WW2.

Does anyone have experience with the P38?

I either own or have shot the Browning, Beretta and Glock, along with many others including a 1911 9mm. I find the Browning to be the best, without question.
