OK, I got some great info from the board on choosing my first semi auto. I went with the Colt Defender. Now I'm ready to burn some powder and need some help choosing ammo. I've been reading past threads and learned a bunch but would still like to hear from all of you.

Would like to hear recommendations on premium defense ammo and also some practice ammo that might shoot comparably to the premium load but without the cost just to get some range time without breaking the bank. Or would I be better off shooting only the premium loads 100% of the time. I'm sure I'll get more consistant results that way but would like to know if there is a cheaper way. Thanks for all your helpful info in advance!

Unless you reload I would reccomend CCI blazer for practice. Just try to find some in the same bullet weight you'll be carrying. As far as carry ammo goes, I prefer Remington golden saber. In my 40cal. p239 sig both bullets shoot almost identical in the recoil and point-of-aim depts. Hopefully that will be the case with your 45.

230-gr. S&B ball ammo (round nose) for practice. Best of the "cheap" stuff in my opinion.

230-gr. Hydrashoks for carry, but put a couple of boxes through your piece to make sure it will feed reliably.

CCI is good and cheap. If after shooting a while you think there is a chance (no matter how small) you will get into reloading, spend an extra $1-$2 per box and get good cheap stuff with a brass casing, S&B 230 grain RN for example. Pick the brass casings up. Once fired brass will cost you 2 to 4 cents each, less than storefront pricing.

Hold off on carry until you feel real comfortable shooting a .45.

Shop around locally. My fave shop has deals from time to time. These days they have Speer Lawman for 9.99 a box, doesn't feed well in 3/4 of my pistols but then I get to practice jam drills. They generally have S&B for 10.99. There are many online sources for ammo if you find no good deals in your area.
