which 45

I am looking to add to my small collection of pistol by getting a .45 auto. I already have two Sigs a P229 .357 and a P226 9mm. I first thought of buying a Sig P220 but then I thought maybe something different like a H&K USP or a Glock. I am looking for opinions on these three pistols. I will not be carrying it so size is not too important. I want to use it at the range and for home defense.

I looked at several different 45's before I settled on a 1911 style. Why? Well first of all, I know that the 90 year old design is reliable. The magazines are single stack so the grips are a great size. Double stack 45's are like holding a 2x4 to me. The 1911 magazines interchange with each other. That means that even though youhave 7 or 8 rounds per mag, you can get mags for as low as $5. Due to their slim profile, you can slide three loaded mags in each back pocket in your jeans and sit without having a lump. Now, which 1911 depends onhow much you wanna invest. :D I would ask ArmySon for any 1911 advice. I think he owns more than the US Military ever did. ;)

The ONLY way to launch 230gr .45 ACP is out of a 5" 1911. Okay, maybe you can substitute with a SIG P220.

Don't bother with the rest.

The Glock 30 has it's own fanclub at http://GlockTalk.com. Go ask over there.

My G20 is extremely accurate and the recoil feels lower than a standard P220. I think the bore axis on the 220 is a bit high, hence the feeling of recoil. Also hense why I want the 39 oz. 220 Stainless. The G30's polymer handle and two recoil springs are very effective in damping the effects of the .45 ACP.

I prefer the SIG 220 only because I prefer the trigger and it seems more "carved of a piece" if you get my drift. Like fine sculpture. But if you can get used to the trigger (not that difficult) you will certainly LOVE the G30. Great gun!

The 1911, if...

you're comfortable with cocked and locked carry. That is, if you intend this a primary defensive pistol.

If you intend this a primary defensive pistol and you are NOT comfortable with cocked and locked, a 1911 is not such a good idea. Since you already have a SIG, another SIG would be easy to adapt.

My own personal favorite for DA/SA types is the H&K. It allows either hammer down DA carry, or use the cocked and locked override.

May I suggest that you go ahead and get a P220-

With you already owning a couple of other Sig's,
there won't be a problem adjusting to a SA/DA
trigger pull.:D Also, the Sig P220 is craftsmanship at it's finest.:) It's fine
accuracy will show, straight from the box!!!
My life has depended on the world famous Sig
P220, since 1988; and she's never let me down.

Whatever you do....if you want an unbiased opinion on what the "best" hangun there is...don't go over to GT!:D The G30 fan club there is almost scary and they will attempt to assimilate you!

But then I pick up my G30 this Friday so I can't say very much!:D

If I were to get a full size I would definitely consider the HK USP Tactical or Expert. You have the option of carrying double action or cocked n locked with the same pistol. Standard mags vs LEO mags only have two rounds difference so there isn't a whole lot of wasted space. The only downfall is that you have to have good sized hands to feel comfortable with the weapon.

But then the new stainless SIG P220's with the accessory rails on the frame are really nice!

Good Shooting

Top of the list would have to be a SiG P220 either Blued or SS. The Blued has a nicer feel IMO and an excellent shooter. But though the SS is heavier, it is nicer looking and more rugged being silver. Second would be the Hk USP45. If you like plastic frames, this is the gun to get. Accuracy wise, the SiG definitely. For more ruggedness, the Hk. Both have good recoils though the Hk has a bit more recoil to it than the SiG. The 1911's are great for adding to a collection but I cannot compare it to the SiG or Hk. As far as Glocks go, they are ok but I am not too fond of them and have never had any real good experience on them enough to get it over either the SiG or Hk.

I have the Ruger P-90. It is flawless in operation taking handloads in the +P with no problem. I have zero malfunctions and find it to be very accurate at 15 yards. I prefer the Ruger to any other 45 ACP I have shot or owned.

I second the kudos for the Ruger P90. While it is a bit large for concealed carry, mine has been 100% reliable with any and all ammunition. With its size it feels like shooting a 9mm even with 230 gr. HydraShoks. If you utilize the P97 magazines you get 8+1 capacity, all in a reliable and economical package. Regards.

I firmly believe that...

Every pistol enthusiast should have at least one 1911 chambered in .45 in their collection.
Hey, I have 7 of them.:D
