In my opinion as a firearms trainer,If you have to buy a .32 which I honestly feel is a complete waiste of money, unreliable and about the worst fight stopper ever invented, then at least buy one in a reliable SIg P 232. A small .38 special revolver or even a little Makarov is a better choice than a .32 . Everyone eslses girlfriends and wives shoots 9mm's and 40's with ease. You can't learn to shoot properly with a gun like that at the 10 feet range its designed for.
Why not consider
A Glock 26 9mm
S&W or Taurus .38 lightweight revolver
Sig P239 9mm
Kahr P9
Nothing wrong with a .32 as second backup gun but I wouldn't buy her one.

...unreliable...

Tell that to my P32, a toy-like gun that never faultered after 700 rounds to date

...the worst fight stopper ever invented...

I do believe that accolade belongs to the incredibly anemic .25acp.

Realistically, there will be little discernible difference (in reactive results) between the slug from a typical .32acp to the face of an assailant and that of a larger caliber; the psychological and physiological effects of a face/head shot at extremely close ranges are exceedingly likely to be debilitating, dissuading further aggression.

Though I'm sure we all appreciate your point of view, I do believe it is best to recognize the niche the .32acp has in the current market, especially taking into consideration of all the new products taking advantage of this particular round.

However, ultimately I will agree with your assessment that the .32acp shouldn't be considered a viable defense caliber if deep concealment isn't an issue. Though I also subscribe to the philosophy that no handgun on the market today can offer the effectiveness of the 12 gauge pump shotgun; the ultimate in home defense.
