Which .308?

Hi!
I was interested in getting a .308. Any recommendations for a good quality but affordable ($400) rifle? A guy at the spoting goods store told me that they were not selling the remington 700's because of the problems with the safeties. In addition, he recommended the Winchester 70 over the Savage 10. I want a synthetic or laminated stock.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Try looking for a Tikka Whitetail Hunter made by Sako in Finland. They run between $425 to $450. (I paid $425 for the wooden stock) A little out of your price range but they are great shooters. They are available with wood, or synthetic stocks. All feature a Match Grade barrel, adjustable trigger, and a bolt that is slicker than a smelt.

Which .308

You should research Remington safety issue before you rule it out. Many feel operator error or careless gun handling is the cause. I have 3 Remington 700's with never a problem. Most of the alleged problems are in the older locked bolt models.

Regarding the Savage Model 10 vs. Winchester Model 70. Did the dealer have Savage in stock? Bet he had Winchester.

Dollar for dollar it is hard to beat a Savage 110/10 series rifle, especially in .308 as they use the 1-10" twist which allows 180gr bullets for heavier game. Remingtons use 1-12". The Savage triggers are a bit heavy and rough, but replacements are now available. They are great value for $$$ spent.

If price is the concern, get the Savage and you will not regret it.

What's the Remington safety problem exactly? I heard of people saying they break but I've never met one of these people. It's just like saying the floorplate is week because it's not steel. Have you ever had one break? I haven't and don't klnow anyone who has. I wouldn't rule out Remington because of a supposed safety problem. What's the rifle going to be used for exactly? Can't really tell you what to get unless we know if you want a bench gun or a light hunting rifle that you can carry all day. Do you need sub MOA (under 1 inch groups at 100 yards) or just good hunting accuracy (about 3 inches at 100 yards)Let us know.
