Wanting a .22mag bolt gun and not sure where to begin. I will want it scoped (prolly a 4x), it won't be used for much other than punching holes in paper out to 100yds, maybe a little small game hunting but not much so it doesn't have to be sub-MOA. Prefer light-weight, don't want a mag sticking out the bottom too bad (getting in the way), I've always preferred compact/youth rifles and don't want to spend more than $500 INCLUDING scope.....does this rifle exist?

sounds like a ruger 77/22 (laminate) I picked up used..the missus claimed it as hers..
If I did'nt have the ruger, I was hard pressed to decide on a savage mk II BTVS in 22 mag or 22 lr..
(I got the lr) and enjoy it immensely, the trigger is better in the savage than the ruger stock..

Absolutely and the 77/22mag is a great choice. With scope, might push your budget a bit. In this case, I woudl recommend the savage line. While you are in there, might consider the thumbhole stock. Just click on the

For $500 including the scope, my guess is you will end up with either a Salvage or a Marlin. Either would not be a bad choice, but not my preference.
The Ruger 77/22 Mag is a better choice, IMHO, but these are rbinging $450-ish on the used market, you might get lucky and find one with a decent scope for that price. If you can find a blued one, you can pick them up for a little less.

Lately, on the internet and in the field, I have been seeing a bunch of used Marlins and the price is right. I picked one up that came with a walnut stock but have seen most in birch. ....

Not much- have you looked at the Mueller line? Perhaps one of these times we could meet up here in town and you could take a peek or two through some of mine.

The Ruger model 77 and the CZ Lux are both pretty good in my mind. I had the Ruger in black synthetic with stainless steel. I like the "all weather" appeal. I also liked the extra slim stock and light weight. It handled pretty nice. Anyone that bought one, I would expect, should be happy with it. But we know opinions vary among members. The Lux was a real treat for me and I consider it to be a step up. I tried to load a 22 Mag 50 grain round into a Remington model 5, but it would not fit. That was the round of my choice. I did load that round into the CZ and it did fit fine. When sighting in, I first set the rear sight on the correct distance mark and fired that round. In one single shot I was done dialing it in.
The Ruger has a scope on it, so open sights were not an issue. The CZ cries out to use the superb iron sights. And whoever put those babies on that rifle did a heck of a good job in getting it right.

I've eaten my fair share of CZ's & others at the range with my $85 Marlin 25-MN that was found in a pawn shop
I slapped on a decent scope (4-16x44), a bipod, a sling, did a trigger job & pillar bedded it...
and on the benches I make guys who spent thousands quite mightily frustrated!!
What more could ya ask for??
I added a few things since this pic...different mounts...etc...
Those older Marlins are hard to beat once you tweak 'em a little...kinda like hotrodding an old Ford 351M into a 502!!
Ugly as sin, but it shocks 'em when ya roar off the line
The only thing I have left to do is buy an XT22 trigger and install it...just to see if its any better than my slick50 trigger job...

My .22mag Is a rem model 5 with the zastava-serbia barrel. I think I paid $350 from a gunshop new. Its got a prostaff 3x9x40 on it. It will shoot dead acurate out to 100yds. I mostly shoot CCI 40gr ammo and it will keep up with a buddy's 17 HMR all day long.I will NEVER sell this rifle. It's a keeper.
