which .22

I'm in the market for another .22

My 4 local options are

used Remington 41 (singleshot): $150
used Remington 510 (singleshot): $140
used Remington 550-1 ( semi-auto): $110
Savage MK-1 (bolt): $120

Has anyone had any experience with any of these rifles? I really want a bolt action, but I really want an older rifle to fix up. I have a single shot which I wil be passing down to my younger brother. I would be okay with another single-shot, but would prefer a bolt.

My main shooting consists of weekend trips to the range.

Any opinions?

The savage at walmart for 127 would leave me some money for a decent scope, although I dislike the synthetic stock. They offer a wood left handed model for 200, which is something I am also considering.

I'm partial to the 510 (and all the 5 teens) so that would be my first thought. If the model 41 was in better shape, I might get that one though. If you want a semi-auto, the 550-1 is loved by many, but I have no first had experience with it.
I like Savage, but I wouldn't even consider it with those classic Remingtons available. All seem to be a good price. The 550-1 seems low enough that I'd be a little nervous, and would have to really check it out good.

The 510 seemed in nicer condition, but could do for a little TLC. the 550 worries me because its condition. The 510 is nice, but I sort of wanted something with a little bit more capacity.

Do you know the difference between the 41 and the 510?

Edit:

It seems the 41 is a lot older than the 510. (discontinued in 39 and 62, respectively)

Of those choices --> Savage Mk. I

But I think I'd rather have a Marlin XT-22

I linked the whole page, because at the bottom are the models with the tubular magazine. Tubular magazines are better than box or "clip" magazines, because they don't have the dumb thing protruding out the bottom, right where you want to rest it. The only problem is there is no 22LR version with the tubular magazine and wood stock. They're both synthetic, until you get to .22 Magnum.

The Savage is a good gun too, but I wouldn't trust it from Walmart. Are you talking about the Mk. I FVT, with the peep sight? They tend to drive prices down, and sometimes, I think they force the manufacturers to make a lower quality version just to come down to that price point.

I bought my Ruger 10/22 from Walmart probably 10 years ago. It is the only 10/22 I've ever read about that was not reliable out of the box. It took two trips back to Ruger before it would reliably feed ANY kind of ammo.

Take the extra time and go to a proper gun shop. They'll have a better selection and better quality stuff. A bit more money, but it will be worth it.

None of the above for me. You clearly want a bolt action 22. I would look very closely at the Savage Mark II with the accu-trigger. It is a very good rifle.

I also lean toward tubular magazines for general shooting. So unless you are doing some pretty serious bench shooting, I would not be afraid to get the tubular mag model. The added bonus is that it shoots shorts, longs, and long rifles if you ever choose to.

The CZ 454/453/455 may be one of the better bangs for the buck out there when you consider out of the box accuracy. But they are a bit more expensive than what you are currently looking at.

Thanks for all the advice. I would love a CZ, but its not in the cards for me right now.

I am going to checkout another LGS this week so i'll let you guys know.

Thanks for the advice, today I found a Mossberg 125 (New Haven 250) so this is going to be my next rifle.

Thanks for the help.

If you're interested in a semi auto the Remington 550-1 would make a great rifle as long as the bore looks good.
My Dad is 70 years old he purchased his 550-1 when he was 16 years old,he even had it shipped to Alaska while in the Air Force running trap lines. It still shoots very accurate and reliable.
Hard telling how many squirrels that 22 has taken?
