which .22 revolver?

New member
been looking for another .22....a revolver this time, will be my first revolver in .22....any reccomendations? looking for somthing in 400 to 600 range, and will be just for target use so looking for a 6 inch barrel:)

You can find used 617s in that price range (absent current buying hysteria) but you have to be VERY patient (I did). You can also occasionally find nice Monson produced Dan Wesson revolvers in .22LR in that price range. Your best bet, however, for finding a good quality .22 in that price is a Ruger Single Six. Those are frequently available sub $400.
 
Also, if you are willing to accept a shorter barrel the Ruger SP101 sells for just under $600. I've never seen one with a 6" barrel but they are commonly available with a 4.2" bbl.
 
Ruger Single Six, Ruger Single Ten, Ruger SP101-22, S&W 617, S&W 317, S&W 63. Those are the best in the $600 and under range. Stay away from the crap that Taurus calls a 22 revolver. Since you have $600, you are in the position to buy something well made, and Taurus isnt it. I have every revolver I listed above, and only the 617 was above $600, and its a nice revolver, but big, and heavy. The SP101-22 or Single Six/Ten are in the low $500s for stainless, and the blued ones are even less.
 
I personally prefer the 4" S&W M617. It just seems to have better balance than the 6". You need to handle one and see what you personally think. But the S&W M617 is probably the best US-made DA 22 revolver out there these days.

You can find as-new or nearly so, S&W M17's and I generally like them better if you don't mind 6-round cylinders.

The Colts are very good too. But they often cost more I vey much like the Colt Trooper Mark III and Officers Model Match as range guns. For the field, I find that I prefer a 4" revolver.
 
I have to suggest the very best that works for my needs: 6 inch 617 with Pachmayer finger groove rubber grip. I tried one bumming it off a guy at the range and then just had to have one of my own. I've had numerous .22's. This one by far is a solid keeper.

my first suggestion always is a sa ruger single six. i saw a new rossie 6" blued daouble action revolver at cabalas today for under $400. taurus also makes some nice da 22 revolvers. shop around, theres alot out there.
 
my tree for DA revolvers

1. Tie S&W or Colt. K22 or OMM
2. Dan Wesson .22
3. Ruger
4. H&R

I've had to many first hand problems with Taurus to recommend them but they also make .22s if your interested.

I might be forgetting some makes but I'm sure others will point them out.
 
I got a S&W 617, very nice, only shot it once lol... Looking at buying the Taurus 992, I felt one at the shop, the trigger is almost as smooth as my S&W 617. About 2lbs off, clean break. :D
 
ive tried the taurus model 94 and the particular revolver shot nice, theres also one NIB on armslist locally for 350...but ive also had problems with my one and only taurus (pt1911) which i no longer own...im gonna hold out for a smith to come along, none of the LGS have any
 
just came across i colt offical police .22lr 6 round, 6inch barrel in what looks to be great condition for 500 aking price....any info on these
 
Im sure its a fantastic gun but with colts you need to know what your buying. Check out the revolver check sticky about colts

Parts are limited and supply of qualified persons to work on them are few and can be expensive.
 
I have a couple Official Police (OP) 22's. I like them, but I would not suggest one as your first range gun (22). They do not have adjustable rear sights. If you are thinking "Colt", look at the Officers Model Match (OMM), or perhaps one of the Trooper Mark III's. The OMM is superb.

After you get the Colt 22 revolver bug, then you start getting things like OPs, Diamondbacks, Cobra's, original Trooper, Officers Model Special, Officers Model Target, and Police Positive. They are all good. :)

I had one for awhile and liked it, but they are a bear to work on if/when they need work. Good colt revovler smiths are dying out, and colts are far harder in my experience to work on yourself than a s&w.

I'm not down on all the colt values, but in my experience, $500 is an okay price for a sound colt OP.
 
If you are looking for a used gun, probably the most common quality, double action .22 out there is going to be a S&W model 17. Look for a one of the later (-3) versions as I believe they are a bit easier to find. The 617's seem to be around also. I also see an occasional Colt OMT around and they are very nice shooters too.

Don't forget the Ruger Single six either, while not as accurate as my Smith or Colt, still a fun shooter and readily available.

I love shooting my .22 revolvers, cheap ammo and stellar accuracy makes for a good day at the range.
