Which .22 revolver for my son?

I'd like to get a .22 revolver for my son but don't want to spend a lot of money. So what are your recomendations for a lightweight, inexpensive .22 revolver?

How old and how big is he?
For a youngster, the Ruger Bearcat single action is just about perfect. There are good small frame double action revolvers from S&W or Taurus. Slightly larger, but also excellent is the Ruger Single Six.
No, these aren't exactly inexpensive. But what you want is a good gun that he can use to teach his kids with.

I agree with the bearcat and single six suggestions. I've got a single six in stainless steel and could not be more pleased. The bearcat would be a lighter weight alternative to the single six.

Bearcat. Small size light weight. The new aluminum kit guns by SW are too pricey IMO. Taurus also makes a small frame steel .22lr pistol.

Couldn't say enough good things about a Single Six with the extra cylinder for 22 Mag. My dad taught me 20+? years ago to shoot pistols with one. Started with shorts and worked up. Still shoots and looks great! Still haven't out grown it. Even at new prices a great buy for a lifetime + of family fun.

Be careful what you ask for..You may get it.

Since they were old enough to shoot, my nieces have used a blue Ruger Single-Six as their primary handgun at the range.

You might want to take a look at the Taurus model 94 DA 9 shot revolver. I have one with a 4" barrel I use for snakes. I believe you can also get it in a 6" barrel. It fits a small hand well, it's light-weight and will shoot long rifle shells. NIB was $215. The only thing I would change, is I would get a SS.

I must cast yet another vote for the Single-six. My dad gave me one when I was about 5 and now 13 years later I still love taking it to the range.

The Taurus 94 is a rough gun. The lack of quality shows - on that particular model. I don't like any of the S&Ws regardless of the politics involved. I also don't like the single six for a first 22. I think a DA with a swingout cylinder is safer. I would suggest a Ruger SP101 in .22 with a 4 inch barrel. The quality is great and the gun will last forever. It will only cost slightly more than the Taurus and yet be vastly superior.

I'm very happy with my Taurus 94. It's reliable, accurate, and holds nine rounds. I've put thousands of rounds through this revolver without a problem. I'm very happy with the quality of this gun for $230 new.

Also if allowing silly politics to play in your purchase decision, Taurus or used SW revolvers are your only options. Ruger is as bad or worse as SW in the political betrayal area.
