I am in the market for a new 1911.Which one do you recommened? It will be for all around use.I only want the full size version. And what personal defense round do you recommened?:D

Buy a Kimber if you can't go for the TRS. They are the best buy for the money on the market today. The Springfields "fully loaded" package would be a good second choice.

As far as load goes, that is somewhat pistol dependent. Each pistol may "prefer" one load over another. So after your break-in period, buy a box of your top three or four choices and see if the pistol prefers one or the other.

Good shooting,

Dean

I wouldn't argue against the Kimber, but don't overlook some of the newer Colt XS or XSE series. I have one of the XSE's which I kept over one of the Kimber Custom Shop pieces. Nothing wrong with the Kimber, it looked fantastic, but I just couldn't shoot it as well.

I had a Springfield Armory base model on layaway at the shop where I worked when a Glock 21 came in. We were having a hard time getting G21's so I grabbed it instead. I say that to say this: I'd have that SA in a heartbeat. Not the loaded model either; I'm talking about the "el cheapo". ;)

I also really like Kimber, and I think you get what you pay for with them.

How much are you looking to spend, roughly (since you mentioned the TRS was out of the question)?

I own 2 Kimber 1911 guns: the Classic Stainless and an Ultra CDP.

In case you aren't up on the models, the Classic Stainless in their base gun, the Classic Custom, in stainess steel. The Ultra CDP is a custom shop 3" carry gun with all the bells & whistles: aluminum alloy frame with checkering & black finish, night sights, premium trigger, heavy "melt" job, etc.

In your position, I would buy the base 5" Classic Custom or Classic Stainless. The trigger pull on mine is very close to the trigger on my CDP, it is just as accurate if not more so (not a surprise with 2" more barrel), and better fits the "all around" gun description. It also has the fixed sights, which I would recommend - it you want to replace them, you have more choices available because of the simple single dovetail machined into the slide.

I think you would be happy with a Kimber!

I am also in the market for a new 1911. Currently my ranking is Kimber, SA loaded, Colt. I would, of course, go with a Wilson or Baer if I could afford it; but I can't.

Colt 1991a1 :) Then as you put rounds through it, you will figure out what you like and what you need out of it. That's what I'm doing w/ mine. Sure it's a project, but it is truly my custom gun

I have two. A Colt XSE Government and a Springfield Armory Loaded in 9mm.

The SA I bought used recently. It had been crowned, had had a trigger job w/ a >2.0lb pull, modified throat and polished ramp. At $649.00, I couldn't pass on it. It's a beautiful pistol and has become my favorite shooter.

The Colt. I haven't shot it yet. I know, that's heresy. But, I bought it as a collectible. My mindset is changing about it, though. I may shoot it yet. I just haven't decided.

2kiddad, shoot that Colt! I'm not sure if this model is "collectable", but to each his own. I have one of the XSE's and really like it. I do have a couple of Colts that I am keeping NIB and unfired; a Colt Z40 and the Colt Cadet 22cal. Will these appreciate ? Who knows but thats the nice thing about having several others to play with. I wouldn't mind having a 9mm in the 1911 format tho, sounds like a good match.

I bought a Charles Daly for 400$. I think it was a really great deal. It cost me less than a Colt or Springfield Mil-Spec gun and had dovetailed Novack-style sights, lowered and flaired ejection port, beavertail grip safety, ambidextrous thumb safety and beveled magazine well. The first 100 rounds I fired through this gun I only used the two factory magazines and I didn't have a single malfunction. (I was going to throw out the factory mags, but I've decided to keep them as range mags.)

A friend of mine bought a Springfield Mil-Spec that also fired its first 100 rounds without a malfunction, but his will cost him twice what mine cost me once he gets done having all the work done so that his gun also has dovetailed sights, lowered and flaired ejection port, beavertail grip safety, ambidextrous thumb safety and beveled magazine well. He will also have to have his gun refinished. I'll enjoy shooting my Charles Daly while he waits for his Springfield to come back.:D

As to the Charles Daly offerings: I have not yet met someone who bought one who was unhappy with it. Quite possibly the best "bargain" 1911 out there.

I have two Kimber Classic Stainless full-size pistols in .45 ACP. Both have been fired extensively with a variety of full-metal jacket ammo with utter reliability. My carry ammo of choice is the Speer Gold Dot 230 grain. This hollow point round has a rounded nose following the same contours of a FMJ and has been completely reliable in my guns. I have yet to have a malfunction with the Speer Gold Dot. It has an excellent street record, second only to the Federal Hydra Shock 230 grain. (Note: It is gaining with every shooting...it has not been around as long as the Federal.) The Federal round does not have as round a nose; therefore, the Speer at least in theory should be more reliable in 1911 style guns. And, reliability is everything in a gunfight!

Look into the Rock Island Armory guns. they are quality built with CNC machinery and are inexpensive to boot. retail around here is +\- $400.00 for the govt. model

from there you can do whatever you want and still come away with an inexpensive custom!
