Which 1911 to buy?

I know there are no simple answers here but I would like to get a reliable, accurate 1911. I am thinking about the S&W 945. I like the customer service S&W gives. Another possibility is Wilson, maybe Baer. I like Kimber but am concerned about their reputation about customer support. I have had several mediocre 1911s in the past and would like to get a dependable one to hang on to. Suggestions very much appreciated.

I looked at both Kimber and Springfield
because I was limited to approx. $700
It was my first 1911, and I choose the
SA, so far it is a great gun, no jams,
very tight. I would also purchase a Kimber
in the future but will wait and see if they
improve customer service and quality control.
Please dont buy Smith due to recent stand they have taken with the government(see
Legal/Political section of this forum for
more info.

IIRC, the S&W is a 1911 pattern, but the parts aren't interchangeable with a regular 1911.

Wilson, or Baer make excellent guns, maybe leaning a bit toward the Wilson simply because I have never heard of someone having a customer service complaint with them. Of the less expensive 1911's, I think the Springfield Loadeds are the best buy.

Teach a kid to shoot. It annoys the antis.

Go for the Kimber. If you have the cash, spring for the stainless Gold Match. It is an excellent gun...mine has over 4,000 rounds through it without jam or parts breakage and it is the most accurate handgun I have ever fired.

Here's one nobody has mentioned -- the Gunsite GPS. It's based on the Springfield loaded, but with all the custom features and reliability testing from the Gunsite Custom Shop. It only costs around $825. I wish I would've hear about it. I'd never would have bought my Colt XS Government. Check out Gunsite.com.

If you want to spend over $1000, go for the Wilson.

e'ville, you can put my name on top of bullet 44's post as I did the same thing. I was looking for a new 1911 and had it narrowed down to the SA & Kimber guns. I chose the SA b/c of the lifetime warranty, SA's reputation for excellent customer service and Kimber's reputation for not-so-excellent customer service.

If you are looking to spend <$700, go with the SA Loaded; it is alot of gun for the money. Over >$700 and I would agree with Puddle Pirate: go with the Wilson. In any event, let us know what you decide and how you like your new toy.

First, what price range are you shopping in?

What are the key features you are looking for? Accurate, Reliable, ... are pretty general.

You can take avearage parts and have someone with skill turn it into something special. You might want to checkout the Gunsmith forum on this sight (hint, hint...)

From a more "production" oriented perspective, Rock River Arms is a good bet.

Infinity offers a stellar pistol as well.
