WHICH 1911 for LEO duty use?

I've narrowed it down to 3 options:

1) Kimber ProCarry II(blued, w/nite sights)

2) Springfield Armory Full-sized ltwt 'LOADED', w/nite sights

3) Springfield Armory Champion ltwt 'LOADED', w/nite sights

Have the 'problems' I've heard about regarding the Kimber 'II' versions been corrected?

Also...in looking at SA's web site, it 'appears' the ltwt Champion is ONLY available from their 'Custom Shop'. If this is the case, why?

OK, to answer your question: I have no idea.

Now, for a stupid question of my own:

Are you employed with a LE agency, and you know they allow SA autos for their officers? Many many agencies, even the ones with 'loose' regs for sidearms, balk at the idea of a cocked-and-locked semi auto "just sitting there waiting to go off" ( ).

Just tryin' to save you a few hundred bucks on a duty gun you can't use...feel free to ignore if you have a thumbs up from your agency (and lucky you if you do!).

As a former LEO, I say for duty use go with the full size model. I just can't seem to feel comfortable with a smaller frame version.

The Campion and ProCarry each has a full-sized frame...just a 'Commander'-length slide.

As for being 'allowed' to carry a 1911 on duty, that's the subject of a HOT debate in my department. When I was hired, 'any' weapon, short of a single action revolver was allowed. Then we hired a new guy from an adjoining department. He was carrying a Series 70 Colt in a Safariland SSIII on duty.

Being a former IPSC shooter and having had a 'not so pleasant' experience with a Glock, I contemplated returning to a 1911 for duty use.

There was NOTHING in our firearms policy forbidding the 1911 for duty use. THEN I got wind that the department was going to buy and issue HKs to all the officers. Currently, officers must supply their own duty weapons....including long arms.

I discussed my intentions with our FI, who at the time, said it might be a couple of 'years' before the department had the funds to buy the HKs. BTW...the ONLY reason they were contemplating buying HKs was because they had sent an officer to the HK armorer's school(our tactical team is issued HK USP 'Tactical' .45s).

I then informed my FI of my intention to ditch my Glock and go with a 1911 on duty. A few weeks later, during an in-service, we're given a NEW firearm's policy. It 'forbids' single action autos for duty use.....heck, it even forbids NON-EXISTANT weapons for duty use(single action centerfire RUGER autos, for one). To put it plainly, it's obviously a hastily thrown together POS.

I was told by one of the supervisors that the ONLY reason the 1911 is NOT currently allowed is due to the POSSIBILITY some officers wishing to carry the 1911 'might not be quailified to do so.' Being an IPSC shooter, pin shooter and an NRA istructor, they weren't worried about 'me', specifically, but instead of addressing INDIVIDUAL problems, they chose the 'blanket approach'.

So...I'm a tenacious little guy and am NOT giving up my pursuit of having a QUALITY 1911 approved for duty use....seeing as how we officers MUST supply our own duty weapons.

BTW...there is a provision in our POS policy that allows CCW holders to carry ANY weapon of their choosing OFF-duty. Guess who has a CCW? :D I plan on being VERY visible around the PD on my OWN time, with a cocked and locked 1911...once I figure out WHICH one to get.

Until the time that I can carry a 1911 on duty, or until such time that the PD issues weapons, I'm 'forced' to carry 'something on the list', which currently is a SIG P239 in .40S&W. Did I mention I have SMALL hands?

Rant off......
