Which 1911 for a new shooter in IPSC?

Hi,
I'd like to try out in IPSC later on this year. I have a Kimber Custom that I shoot real well but I'd like to keep it stock. If I were to invest in another 1911 for this sport, what kind should I get and what mods would I need to make to be half way competitive? I know I don't want to be in the Open class. Thank you.

I am in the same boat

I want to shoot limited, so it depends on what class you want to shoot and your price limit. Do you want to get a gun that you can always use and not need another with no mods. Or do you want a gun to use as a base gun and build up or do you want a gun to just use now and see if you like IPSC and then get another one later if you like it. Because we are in CA we cant have any high caps unless we allready have them. I am going to get the top notch gun and just go for a SVI or a STI but I think I will stick with a SVI. You can only get the STI edge in CA right now because it is on the drop test list but I have a friend that is a top competitor and is sponserd by Infinty aka SVI so I have alot of options. E mail me off line and tell me what you are looking for and I can call my friend and see what he has, I know he has a few infintys, paras all built up, and some STIs as well. I am in CA and if you want something from a PPT I can talk to him and see what you guys can work out. E mail me. hope this helps

Sanddune,

Take your stock Kimber to the matches.
Enter in Limited 10.

All you need are all your magazines, carriers for them, and some sort of open-top holster. Some 10-shot magazines for the long stages will help.

Have fun, learn how to manage the courses, save money, study what is being shot and make an informed and experienced purchase for your Next gun. There is too much stuff available at too high prices to make a choice on word of mouth.

I agree with Jim. Shoot your singlestack 1911 in Limited 10 and have fun! 10-round magazines are good for the field courses, 8-round mags work well for many of the stages, unless you have a miss and need to make up a shot or two. I bought 5 10-round mags and use them for all stages, just in case.

Lots of Limited 10 shooters have singlestack 1911s. You'll be in good company. :)

Let me jump on the bandwagon here. Shoot the gun you own, and don't make any modifications at all. First of all, it sounds like you have never tried the sport before so why sink a lot of money into something when you don't know if you will like it ? Second, shooting a bone stock gun is fun. Contrary to what most people believe, you can't buy first place. You ask the question; "what mods would I need to make to be half way competitive? " The biggest mod by far that will make you competitive is skill. Not the gun, not the sights, SKILL. I am not trying to be smart. If you are good with your gun, you will easily beat all the arm chair commandos that are more worried about having the latest gear, the latest sunglasses, and the latest match shirt. Put another way, do you think Rob Latham would be half way competitive using your gun at your local IPSC matches ? My advice would be to shoot your Kimber until you win the Limited 10 class with boring regularity then you might want to consider buying an open class gun and switching classes. Spend the money on ammo.

FACT = Shooter NOT gun

At the last IPSC match indoors at the S&W Academy the TOP OVERALL (out of seventy!) shot Production Class, which means a Glock, loaded with 10 rds, from gear behind the center of hip, scoring Minor.

Beat ranked Open Class (and Limited Class, too) shooters using compensated optically-sighted 30 rd race guns.

NEVER the gun.

Excellent sage advice from all of you. I'm grateful. Will shoot my stock Kimber with the greatest of confidence. Thanks y'all.
