Which 10/22 ???

My ol Marlin Model 60 has seen better days, after zillions of rounds it`s just plain wore out. :( So a replacement is in order,I`m thinking a 10/22 is the logical choice but which one to get? I`ll probably accessorize it some over time but I don`t wanna make a mini Rambo special or a 12lb. varmint zapper with it. Mostly it`ll just see plinking duty and the occasional groundhog. The standard model doesn`t thrill me to death but it has a certain lil M1 carbine look to it. The birch stock is kinda blah and the length of pull is too short for me. I`ve been checking out the stainless/ synthetic model. It`s pretty sharp looking and looses the barrel band which I guess could be good for accuracy? The length of pull looks a bit longer but I haven`t handled one yet to be able to tell. I`m not sure how I feel about the looks of the hollowed out stock sides. The target model is slick but it`s also expensive and I`d like to retain iron sights. What do you guys think I should get? Any tips on accessories that are must haves or ones to avoid? Marcus

I am not really in the habit of answering "a or b" questions with the answer "c", but really...I would suggest looking into some of the bolt-action rimfire rifles. The Ruger 77/.22 is a fine shooter as is the Remington 541-T, and there are more that others here can recommend based on experience. But, if you figure you just GOTTA have an autoloader, get the Ruger 10/.22T. I have seen these rifles shoot incredibly well without spending hundreds of dollars on all the after-market stuff that is required to make a regular 10/.22 shoot well.

Hope you enjoy pondering and deciding!

All Ruger 10/22's are fine tools. I have to admit that the stainless with the synthetic stock has a certain appeal to it. :)

Might also check out the sporter version. Checkered walnut stock and no barrel band, plus sling swivels. Seems to be a bit longer than the basic 10/22, and has a rubber butt pad for a non-skid surface. Some minor trigger smoothing was in order for mine, but once done, I haven't had to do anything but feed it what it likes, which seems to be stingers. The action doesn't like the low velocity target stuff. Shoots well with green tag but won't cycle the bolt.

I have a standard 10/22 it is a great shooter, at 50 yards I can hit the bullseye of a 50 yard smallbore target with no problem using the Iron sights. It is also much lighter than the target model and 1/2 the cost. I gave mine a trigger job by shooting a few bricks of ammo through it. the stock trigger improved considerably with shooting. The standard barrel is accurate and handles and points well for me. My wife says this is her favorite gun Period.

You can always get a composite bull barrell or a target barrel for an extra $200 later if the standard model does not make it for your benchrest shooting;)

Yep, start with the vanilla

The stock Ruger K10/22 (stainless with black composite stock) is a great shooter in it's own right. At least half the fun of owning a 10/22 is "customizing" it to suit your own taste. I don't believe that you'll be disappointed, whichever version you choose.

Two.

The sporter cause it is so pretty.

The stainless plastic because it is indestructable.

The Ruger 10/22 really is the standard that all other inexpensive 22 autoloaders are judged against. Great rifle.

Just got my first 10-22, Marcus, but - - -

I'll share my limited knowledge.

Local guy needed some money and heard that I might be in the market for a .22. He called and price sounded okay, so I went and met him. Turned out his was the one y'all are calling the sporter model, barely used, in about excellent condition. Came with a nice nylon sling.

Didn't like the scope at all, but bought the rifle for reasonable money. Went to Fort Worth gun show this past weekend and bought the Simmons 22 Magnum fixed 4X scope. All okay, but for the trigger pull. I'll probably shoot it some more before I have it smithed.

It is now dead-on at 50 yards, and it shoots under two inches as is, with bulk pack Federal 36 gr. HP ammo. I've only shot one group with Fed Gold Medal Target ammo, and that seems to have great possibilities--Four out of five rounds in an inch at 50 yds with the gritty trigger. I ran out of light before I could do much more testing.

I really don't want to accessorize it any more, and am quite pleased with the rig. I have two friends who have highly customized 10-22s, and they are pleasing to shoot. But I don't see them taking their rifles out for plinking or squirrel hunting.

Whatever you choose, best of luck- - -

Thanks for the input guys. I think I`m gonna go with the stainless/ synthetic version. I figure I can always add a bull barrel and stuff but I can`t make a standard one stainless later. ;) :D Marcus

Sounds like your needs/desires will be filled with any of the non-target models. You won't be dissapointed.
