which 10/22 to buy?

Hey all,

recently saved up enough to finally buy a 10/22. I have two major choices of where to buy that I'm interested in.

A local pawn shop where I can buy a wood 10/22 with a 25 round magazine and that is in pretty good shape. It's running 199 but I'm about 95% sure I can at least get it down to 175 and maybe to 150 since I'm a frequent customer there.

Walmart. They currently have brand new 10/22s in hardwood with a 10rd mag for 189 OR stainless with a 10rd mag for 197.

I gotta say that I like the stainless and might just spring for it but I can probably get a hardwood one for 50 bucks less.

Which one would guys go for?

used 10/22 hardwood 25rd mag - 175/150
OR
new 10/22 stainless 10rd mag - 197.

Thanks ahead of time.

Also, I know these "which should I buy" threads are annoying but I'm really torn on this. Especially since I like supporting local business vs Walmart

I'd say buy the one at the pawn shop. And also check out your local gun shops for similar deals.

Unless you NEED the rifle, spending a few more dollars at your local business is well worth it. The money will stay in your community, instead of being distributed among executives and shareholders to sit in off-shore bank accounts.

Not a tough decision for me anyhow. A used rifle, or a new one for right about the same money? I’d go new.

Two things before anyone comments. Buying from Wal-Mart doesn’t make you a Commie Pinko. The people working there are your friends, your neighbors, the family you go to church with. They need jobs too.

Second, don’t count on that 25 round magazine to be any thing more then a paper weight unless it’s one of the new ones made by Ruger. Those aftermarket 25 rounders are junk.

Okay, let me have it….. :(

I agree with Mike38, wal-mart is a great place when you have a family and you cant really afford to go anywhere else because they are too high on all their products. I have used Butler Creek steel lipped 25rd. magazines without issue but since ruger is making a superior 25rd. mag I would just go with that one. Oh Yeah, definatly the new stainless 10/22, you know for sure what you are getting and its stainless.

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy the new one. The only reason to ever purchase a used firearm is if it's a great deal or it's hard to find. The used one you described is neither. Who knows what the previous owner did with it? Certain things you can easily look for, others not unless you take it completely apart...

I get supporting the little guy. It's a good thing to do when you can. You can always do that by buying ammo there...or a rifle case etcetc. It sounds like you don't have a ton of money to be wasting, get the better NEW rifle and enjoy it..instead of gambling on buying a used one. JMO...10/22s are a lot of fun....as long as they work!!(get the new one to be sure)

To get new and stainless for only ~$25 more.....

Really...??? You have to ask???

Nah, I'm teasing, I understand where you are coming from about supporting your locally owned place.

I think of it like this, if they have the identical product and the LGS is only around 15% more go with that. But, when they have different product, go with the product you like better. In this case, go stainless.

you do realize that the stainless is still aluminum receiver painted silver. I have built allot of 1022's

Check the serial number on the PS gun. and check the date code. it might be a Little older and have metal trigger group instead of the new plastic ones. also machine quality on the older ones is far better. if you ever plan to due any mods or upgrades the older ons are far better to work with. i have done two builds on the new ones and the older ones run smoother with less work.

Check out rimfirecentral they are addicting be careful

Thank you bringing that up because I forgot to mention it. The entire reason I decided to go with the 10/22 instead of some other plinker is because I was to mod the living hell out of it. For starters I was to put this on it within my first two months of having it. Sorry, I like bullpups. They're pretty in an ugly way.:D

So do the older ones really have that big of a difference? I don't know how old the PS 10/22 is, but it'll be easy to find out. If the overall quality is that much better on the older models and it happens to make my life a little easier down the road, than I may just go with the PS one (assuming its one of the older models).

What date range should I look for in the older 10/22s?

Thanks again guys(and gals if you are there), you're being a lot of help

Id go with the stainless. Plus if you do buy high capacity mags for it i would recomend butler creek steel lips. They work 110% better than the hot lips, steel feed lips are the way to go.

You can't go wrong but can do better.

I can say that I will never buy the newer issue of this rifle. However, I am always on the look-out for an older one in good condition. These 10/22's have gone through many generations of changes and they keep getting cheaper. Obviously in order to stay competative. .... Sales.

They are still good, just not as good. The older ones have already established a great track record. The newer ones are not there yet. I know of a company that does custom trigger work on these but only on the Alum. trigger housings; (older ones)

In your case, it would be hard to make a choice because I prefer SS. If both were blued, I'd go with the older one, if in fact it was an older one. One way you can tell, is if the mag. release is flush to the housing. Another, if the trigger housing is Aluminum. ... :)

Be Safe !!!

In that case, forget everything I said, buy the cheapest beater around, and get to work modding the daylights out of it.

Make sure to post some pics along the way.

Good luck!

Older all the way. I recently bought a 1968 walnut stocked 10/22, and I love it. I probably would not have bought a 10/22 if this one hadn't dropped into my lap.
If you must have that bullpup, more power to you...I think it is hideous.

Just back from the PS. Upon further inspection, it was a 10 22 carbine. To my knowledge, the carbines make modifications more challenging(is this true?) so I'm probably goin to Wally world for stainless.

All depends ???

Not really, Perhaps just more expensive. Kind of depends how deep you dig into your pocket for the modifications. Are you saying that the one at Walmart is a sporter as oppose to the carbine. If it's a Sporter, then this "cold" be a good deal. I could be wrong but suspect they could both be Carbines. .....

Be Safe !!!

the paw shop gun is a used model that costs more than the NIB model at wally world. the 25 round mags only cost 25 buck and that's for the new ruger factory 25 rounders..the one with the gun is more than likely a butler creek mag that may or may not be worth a dern depending on whether it's got steal or plastic lips on it. I would go with the walmart model.
