Where's the 44 Mag Silvertips?

Hello,

I've been trying to find a few boxes of this stuff, but can't seem to have any luck. I must have went through over 20+ sites to no avail. Would you happen to know where I could find 2-3 boxes? Even your local pawn shop will do since they could probably ship.

Thanks :)

If I remember correctly Silvertips are considered a very poor performer in the self defense ammunition world. I don't think they make them any more - and I may be wrong on that..... But, I guarantee someone will jump in and correct me.

I think you may want to research a different brand / design of bullet.

I'll be interested to watch this thread.

I cannot say if Winchester is still producing the Silvertip or not. The ammo has been increasingly difficult to find over the past couple of years, so I'm inclined to think what's available now is the last of production filtering out of hiding spots.

I'd like another couple of boxes myself. I'm down to 12 rounds of Silvertip in .44.

I don't know how often Winchester runs a production line of the STHP bullets.

They still have it listed in their catalog (Super-X X44MS).

The Winchester LE rep told us in passing several years back that the company had recently (back then) revised their STHP bullet design across the board, but not much else was discussed because it's not one of the lines intended for marketing to LE customers. It just came up because someone asked if the 185gr STHP .45 ACP load was still being made.

I don't think I have much of it left, myself, but then I haven't carried one of my .44 Magnum revolvers as an off-duty weapon for many years.

Hmmm....this is a little new to me. You may be thinking of the shootout in 86'(?) where the 9mm Silvertip was blamed for not penetrating deep enough. I myself do not blame the ammunition and feel it performed exactly as intended.

Everything i've seen regarding the Silvertip loads has shown the Silvertip to be a excellent load with very reliable expansion.

The 44 Magnum Silvertip load expands to a large diameter and will yield over 12+ inches of penetration....what's not to like? Not to mention the high velocity out of a 6" polygonal barrel.

In .44 Mag there are much better bullets available than the Silvertip.
Really....Fortunately for me I know most if not all of the better self-defense loads for the .44 Mag, but would you care to list what you think are "better" loads? I really fail to see why any would be better. Like I said above, if it reliably expands to a large diameter and penetrates 12+ inches what makes the others so superior?

Winchester's web site still lists them under their Super-X line, in 16 calibres. They may be emphasizing their newer Supreme Elite line with its bonded PDX1 bullets, but those are not available in .44-anything. I've seen .357 silvertips in the stores lately.
