Where to store a gun while at class.

I pretty sure there is not a good answer for this question but thats why I'm asking i might be missing something.

I'm going back to school this fall and I want to ride my bike to class for a little exercise. I would like to carry while riding but i can't bring it in the the class room. Would a cop shop hold my gun for me? I seem to think not. I thought about if I knew someone in class to keep it in that they're car, but I have been out of school a while and the odds of that happening are about none.

Any thoughts of a LEGAL way of storing a gun in this situation.

P.S. I will be riding about 15 miles or country/urban mix, parts of which are bad kinda bad.

I could suggest transferring to University of Utah, and your problem would be solved...:D

But on a more serious note, wasn't the MI state police looking at allowing students with permits to carry guns in state colleges?

The onlyh solution I could come up with is a lock box at a bank and getting in and out of it daily would likely be a huge pain. There may be a place with rental lockers also. OSU had both close to campus, although not so much for this purpose and many banks are posted. Locking lockers have minimal security anyways.
What if the person you leave your gun with doesn't show up to class? Are you going to turn around and go home? I know a person who has a holster attached to the underside of their bike seat for a small 32, but they don't leave the bike unattended out of their view for long periods.

There has been some talk of allowing students to carry in Michigan but its far from passing as law, from what I understand.

It's going to be highly dependent on your state's laws. Most campuses are "gun free zones". Considering the wealth of targets and minimal security, it's a wonder that more mass murders don't occur on them.

Your best bet is going to be to either not take it at all, or be resigned to the fact that you're breaking the law anyhow so just carry it illegally.

I sugest the former.

Another possible option would be to rent a storage locker at a gym for your helmet and leave a non descript bag inside the locker to put your pistol in.

I always drove a car to school and kept my pistol in the glovebox when I was on campus. I leave the glovebox locked up inside a locked car just to be safe. Unless thiungs have changed in the last 10 years, a police officer has to have a search warrant to gain access to a locked container unless you're being arrested.

As for the lock box at a bank, I think that is a bad idea. That would require you to carry it INTO the bank, which we all know is not a good legal idea.

I was once in your situation. When I was in college, I had my shotgun with me because there was a sporting clays field down the road. The college is in NY.

Seeing that keeping it in a dorm room was not only illegal and against school policy, its also a TERRIBLE idea. Drunk roomates and shotguns dont mix!!

The local police department was more than willing to safegaurd it for me when I was not using it. It worked out pretty well!!

Rather than looking at all the ways to get around a rule you know to exist, why not check with the campus cops to see if they have a provision for storing your firearm?

Of course you should make the call from a pay phone located in another city, and be sure to use a voice changer.;)

stay safe.

I hear this a lot but never really figured it out. My local bank is pro CCW.
There have been a couple cases where a CCWer stopped bank robberies and no one ever complained.

OSU has a range in the middle of campus. 22 only and owned by the US army but is open to all students and guests several times a week for club events. It is an oddity.
