Where to get a Garand in .308?

I looked at Fulton Armory and don't see myself spending $1100 on on of their rifles. Any idea as to where I could find a 308 Garand, preferably a "shortie"?

Check out this link regarding the shortened Garands. You may want to reconsider a shorty.

Having a Garand in 7.62 mm Nato isn't any problem. There some work which needs to be done including a new barrel. However, as the article explains, shortening the action can result in the gun failing. It's all in the op-rod (which affects timing w/regards to locking & unlocking) and some conversions were notorious for their lack of longevity.

i've got one with a arlington, va. barrel in .308 full length and it's a tack driver. found it for 300.00, not to brag, but i got lucky and it's a keeper with a springfield armory 1942 receiver.

The Fulton Arms guns are priced extremly high.

The easiest way to get a 308 Garand is to have a gunsmith build you one. Get a Wilson barrel in 308 from Brownells, should run $140 dealer price. You can also get the Navy 308 plastic spacer from Brownells (about $8 ) but not required.

Get a CMP Danish Garand rifle for $400. Have a gunsmith replace the barrel. Heres a link, I use a local guy but this fellow has a good rep and only charges $50 http://www.m1garandrifle.com/. You can also sell your take off barrel to a collector or shooter and make anywhere from $50 - $250 for a nice Winchester barrel

That all you really need to do. I think Springfield Armory offers a fixed price service to have a 308 barrel provided & installed also. I think SA offers the Tanker option but I would recomend against it, build a M1 not a frankenM1!

I had a 308 built with a CMP B grade receiver, wilson barrel, Danish parts kit, Boyds stock. It is a sweet shooter without any match treatment at all. Holds 2moa easily with Port. surplus 308

Oleg,

Champions Choice in Tenn. offers a .308 conversion on your Garand for $195.00. This includes installing & headspacing a 6 groove Douglas Match Grade barrel & return of your old one.

You can't beat a deal like this.........

I've not had this conversion done on any of my M1's yet, but just as soon as I get one from CMP with a questionable bore, it'll happen for sure.

CC is also a great place to buy any & all items you need for all types of competitive rifle shooting, be it air rifle, smallbore, or highpower. They've got it all.

Best,
Swampy

I can second the work by Champions Choice.

A few years ago, I too felt the need for a .308 Garand. I bought an old junker from a friend for $250 that had a shot-out barrel. Had CC do the conversion for me. Then, as time went on, I did all the other work myself (glass bedding, reaming out the aft ring on the gas piston, etc) using the excellent NRA book on accurizing.

Refinished the stock last and it's a real keeper. Very accurate and fun to shoot. I even bought an S&K scope mount from Fulton and used it for deer hunting one year.

If you are not in any great hurry, it's a fun project.
