Where to get .303 Savage Ammo

:( A lot of Savage onwers are either selling, rechambering, or parting out their rifles that are chambered for the 303 Savage Cartridge; mainly the 1895's, 1899's and the model 99's. If all you Savage owners who still have these guns and are not shooting them because it's not economically a good idea:mad: ; because one 20 cartridge box of 303 Savage could run anywhere between $39 to $75 per box and some places even more:( .

WELL!I may have found a way to bring down the price to $20 per box:D .

I made contact with Reed's Ammunition & Research, LLC (Website) http://www.reedsammo.com/

Below is what they E-mailed me. So if we can get enough shooters to tally the required amount of orders we can show a demand and get this price down. Read their E-mail responce Below::)

If we can get enough requests, or if you can find enough folks to put together a bulk order of 1000 or so rounds, we can likely cut the cost to around 20.00 or less per box just depending on what bullets are selected. Keep in mind the 1K order is just the caliber itself, if need be we can load it with different bullets across the whole order, for example, 250 ea of 4 different bullets or 100 each of ten different bullets. Let me know what we can do for you.

Yeah, the popularity of those rifles (which you "ustacould" get for $20-$50) took a serious decline when the surplus ammo supply dried up. My sister used to get them for less then a dime a round and sit & shoot at a big rock on the side of a mountain until she got it to come down

Would be nice to see them again at less then the factory hunting ammo goes for.

Response to purchase sav. 303 in bulk from Reeds

Savage 99 .303

I have often seen people refer to the model 99 Savage 303 as the 1899 Savage but on my rifle Barrel it reads as follows "Patent rcb. 1893. July 25 1893." This was handed down from my Granfather 20+ years ago when he past. And "Savage ARMS CO." Says in their history page that they came out in 1894. I found they did not keep track of thier serial #'s or were lost in fire or some such. Mine is stamped on the Reciever 35.956 and is registered as made 1893 since there is no record. Makes me wonder if it was made in 1935 and was the 956th that year. My father said he thought it was made in 1924 from Info he found somewhere along his past search. Anyone have the 99 Thousand Dollar answer?

I bought a partial box at an old time hardware store marked .303 British.

Inside were 12 .303 savage rounds.

This was in about 2006.

"What price" I asked the elderly gent behind the counter?

"Says .40 cents a piece on the box" he noted. When was the last time you saw rounds for sale "apiece" ?

Sold.

Indicates it was made in 1895, probably a 1984 model. Carefull very early models had a .311 bore. Later .308, dies usually have both expanders. .308 bullets safe in all but accuracy suffers in the larger sizes. Best to have all rifles "slugged" to be sure of bore size. Year info:

Good news for all, currently www.grafs.com has new correct brass (not reformed) for sale at arround $47 per hundred, less in bulk. Also they have ammo (.308) for $26 to 28 per box of 20. Don't wait too long, it sells out fast when it is in stock. Was over a year between last batch sellin out and this new stock comming in!!

Savage .303

I had a friend about 30 years ago had a Savage 99 in Savage .303. He was complaining about the cost of shells then. I happened to have a thousand 7.62 Nato machine gun brass at the time. I know it is still cheap as dirt! I found that the 7.62 brass full length sized in .303 Savage RCBS dies and then trimmed to length worked just fine. I got his rifle and started out on the low side with IMR 3031 and worked up till I started getting sticky extraction, then backed off a grain and a half. Wouldn't want anyone to try and fire any of those in .308 Winchester rifle though. I have always been bothered by sizing headstamped brass into something else and then loading them for anything different than the headstamp. I consolled myself with knowing that the brass never said it was .308.

True story about .303 Savage

About 40 years ago, I was on our local City Police Force. Friend of mine found himself about the 4th patrol car going to a Bank alarm about 3:00pm one day. He decided to hang back and watch the area. He noticed a young man walking away from the bank with a suspiciously heavy coat on for the kind of day it was. He pulled over and invited the young man into the back of the patrol car for a chat. The young man obliged and as my friend turned around to talk to the young man he was staring into the muzzel of a severely sawed off Lee Enfield. The young man pulled the trigger, CLICK! The young man looked absolutely stunned! After thier relative positions were shifted a bit and the young man was quietly sitting in handcuffs, my friend decided that he had better have a look at that Lee Enfield. He shucked the bolt and a live cartridge popped out with more in the clip. The cartridges were .303 Savage. Just a little bit smaller than the .303 British and the firing pin didn't set the thing off. My friend has thought a lot about that day!

303 Savage Ammo

I have in my possession 7 boxes of Peter's 303 Savage cartridges with 20 rounds per box. My brother-in-law purchased a case of these cartridges after he purchased a used Savage 99 in 1965 and found that the ammo was obsolete. These cartridges have been stored indoors and the boxes have not been opened. I am asking $50.00 per box if you want all seven boxes. The Old West Scrounger charges twice this price. I can be reached at: johnolson87@yahoo.com.
