Where to find a S&W Model 58?

You and me both. All the ones that I have seen in the last few years have been at collector prices, not shooter prices. Can't blame 'em - if I had one, I wouldn't let it go either.

Actually for some reason there have been quite a few show up in Gun List lately. Some at reasonable, "shooters" prices. Gun List is published three times a month. If you do not subscribe you can read the classified ads at www.collectit.net .

I was promised a Shortycicle and I want a Shortycicle!

I bought the first Model 58 I saw at a gunshow in Northern Virginia in the last several years.

I got it from a guy I used to work for.

A very nice 4", probably about 97%+, fired very little at all, not even enough to put a noticable drag line around the cylinder.

I hate to tell you this, but I only paid $295 for it. :)

For some reason 57s and 58s seem to be exceedingly scarce in this area. I don't know if it is a factor of their relative unacceptance by the general shooting population, or the fact that people who know and appreciate the .41 have snapped them all up.

Any way you look at it, though, I've now got mine, and I'm quickly finding out what people know and like about the .41. It's a bruiser with Remington 210-gr. JSPs, but not so much as the .44.

I REALLY like mine!

Beware the man with the S&W .357 Mag.
Chances are he knows how to use it.

Blue 58 (2)? or nickel 58 (1)? or blue 4" 57 (1)?

(rereading this the next morning I should have posted in the for sale forum, but it was too good an opportunity to tease and needle the poor guy to pass up. Apologies)

But my right wrist is getting arthritis and in case it gets much worse I'm looking to get a BDA 380 in nickel, pref w/2 or more hicap mags.

They turn up from time to time on Auction Arms (www.auctionarms.com).

IMHO the 58 is one of the best outdoorsman's sidearms extant. For camping, hunting, hiking, etc. in all but big bear country it is pretty hard to beat. Ammo can range from relatively light Silvertip loads, to traditional full power JHP and JSP loads, to heavy, hard-cast flat points for maximum penetration and bone crushing performance.

SAw two 41mags....at dans gun room in Hernando fla., information can give you the number...one was a mdl 58 and the other was a long barreled 57....both were in very good shape, with the nod going to the 57.....fubsy.
