Where to find 9mm ammo, special type?

My range only allows lead bullets to be used. No type of jacket. My local gun shops do not sell this type of ammo in 9mm, so I have started to look online. I am confused as to how to identify thet type I am looking for. I see ammo with FMJ (full metal jacket?) and JHP (jacketed hollow point?) on the box, but what would it say for just regular lead bullets? I looked at ammoman.com, but they did not sell this type.

Can anyone point me to a site that does sell this type and how I can identify "lead only, no jacket" ammo when shopping?

Thanks,

hjm

Black Hills ammo (www.black-hills.com) lists a remanufactured 125 grain round nose lead bullet for 9mm.

Steer clear of "gun show" reloads - I've heard of too many problems with those to use them myself. (In case you're wondering what a "gun show" reload is, it's usually a guy running a small reloading business out of his garage who sells his stuff at gun shows. Quality is TOTALLY dependent on who's doing it.)

Note that lead-bullet loads are not recommended for use in some 9mm pistols, particularly Glocks.

no choice...

I cannot go to another range. The next closest is over an hour away. This is an indoor range that happens to be very close to my home.

I believe the lead-only rule has to do with the backstop. I do not know what it is made of, nor how different materials react to different loads and types of bullets.

Not that this helps you any, but this is strange. The indoor ranges around here DON"T allow you to shoot lead bullets because of the lead dust contamination. I shoot primarily lead bullets and can't us them on indoor ranges, which doesn't bother me because I almost never shoot on one anyway. I notice that Dillon Precision sells bullets called Raniier Ballistics LEADSAFE bullets just because of this lead dust problem.
I reload and lead bullets are considerably cheaper than jacketed bullets. I don't know where you order something like that, but I am sure someone sells them. Indoor ranges around here used to sell lead bullet reloads at the range by the pound before the grave dangers of lead bullets were "discovered". Another buzz word to look for in advertising is "cast bullets". Cast bullets are another name for lead bullets.

HJM,

The acronym to look for is LRN (Lead Round Nose). These are typically 125 grain projectiles loaded to between 950-1000 fps to reduce lead-fouling of the barrel.

The plus side is that the lead projectiles will certainly prolong the life of your barrel (hey, there has to be an upside, so lets get it out front).

I have not used LRN in 9mm for many years, just LRN in 45 ACP and .38 Special. You are correct in your assessment that they are hard to find. Outside of the "gun show reloads" mentioned by other astute posters, I haven't seen any for sale anywhere in a long time.

I would venture to say that most LRN 9mm you will find these days are reloads. Lead is generally used as a cost-savings advantage when compared to jacketed bullets. With 9mm jacketed bullets being so inexpensive anymore, I can see why some manufacturers may have declined further production of lead bullet 9mm. Hey, look at it as all the more reason to purchase a reloading setup!

Hank seems to have a line on some. If I run into any source(s) I'll be sure to post back here. No promises, just paving.

Yes, their policy sucks. How's somebody supposed to test out their prospective defensive rounds?
