Where to buy, redux.

Thought I would post a brief followup on my quest to purchase a first handgun (whether to buy in store or by mail). After looking a little harder, I found two stores in the area with knowledgeable, helpful staff, and prices much better than list (though not the absolute cheapest available; because this is all new to me I wanted a face to deal with, not just a name from an internet list).

So, after being severely tempted by a very slightly used Sig P226 at a great price, ended up with a NIB Sig P229 in .40. Shot 100 rounds today with nary a hickup (other than my skills as a shooter). This is much more fun than it probably should be. However many million gun owners there were last week, as of yesterday there are that many million plus one.

Welcome to the club.
Although I grew up hunting I had never owned a handgun until the Brady bill passed. Just the idea that "they" were going to stop me from having one made me buy one. Now I love my Glock 23 and shoot it all the time, and I'm thinking of branching out to smaller gun or a 1911 style like my Dad carried in WWII.

tl,

Glad to read that the Sig has a new home.
Hope it brings you many years of joy and dependablility.
Happy shooting...

TL,
Ya know, buying hand guns is like eating those famous potato chips: you just can't seem to stop at one. I, to, am fairly new to the sport of pistol shooting and I now own three pistols and just purchased my first rifle. And, I've already taken my 17 yr old daughter to the range with me to share the experience. It is really fun and I find I'm facinated with the awesome engineering that goes into making these little machines work. (some better than others I might add). The important thing is to make sure you have a relationship with a local gun shop, however. As a consumer, there is nothing more important than having a source where you can get face to face information with anything you purchase. Handguns do more than wash your dishes or cut your grass, however. You need someone who will help you progress in this sport and the local gun shops usually have a number of educated and experienced people whose only job it is to make sure you buy what you need and not what's on special today.

Oh, and one other thing: Join the NRA and READ, READ, READ about your gun and others you may be interested in owning.

Good Luck,

Rome

I believe the bug has bit, since I am already preparing a list for future purchases. The next will probably be a revolver. I know that's backwards from the accepted order of purchase, but the sa's have always felt better in hand than revolvers. Also, the revolver selection in stores in my area has not been as good, so I didn't feel as confident in my ability to make a choice that I would be happy with long term.

I've been reading about and handling guns for about 3 months, so the Sig was not a spur of the moment choice. It has a good mix of all the things I wanted without seeming like a compromise: not too big and not too small on either caliber or pistol size, comfortable fit in my hand, and a sterling reputation for quality both as a product and a company. And it looks good to me, an esthetic combination of art and science (I'm sure that's a non-pc statement). I believe I will go 'eclectic' with future purchases, both in brand and caliber, to give me a better sense of all the good choices and options that are out there.

I suggest that you put a .22 near the top of the list. It is a lot cheaper to shoot a .22 than that .40 you have and you will shoot it more.
