Where to buy Powder

Where is the best place to buy powder? Cabela's, Midway USA, or should i just go to my local gun shop. Obviously i am looking for the best deal and saw that shipping of powder is ridiculous.

I dont mean for this to sound facetious but right now the best place is the one who has in stock what you are looking for. The haz mat charge when shipping powder hurts and the only way to help alleviate that is to buy in bulk. The only other option is to keep popping in stores to see what they have to avoid those costs. If you live close to a bass pro they will free ship to the store and waive the haz mat fee.

As much as I prefer to order many of my shooting supplies online it's rare that I can find enough of a powder I want in stock online to make the hazmat shipping worthwhile so my suggestion is LGS.

what state are you in? lots of powder places here in Georgia that are selling from 22-25$ a pound. availability is pretty great ATM

It's a toss-up.

I had good luck scoring Titegroup at a major chain and they matched an online retailer's price @ $18.99 to boot.

Most other powders I've had better luck finding at a local gun shop. Check both, get on a mailing list, call often, show up frequently.

I have had far better luck finding powder locally rather than online. Not much luck at the national chain stores like Cabelas or BassPro.

I have dozens of powders, but seem to be burning H4350 and thinking nothing else will do [not a mature attitude].

May 2013
My jug of H4350 was getting low, and started looking for a year.
I signed up for every alert me, and every reloading forum notify me, called sporting good stores in small towns, etc.

I was alerted that H4350 was available at midway.
Within seconds they were out.
I was alerted that graf had H4350.
I got some and seconds later they were out.

Most of my powder comes from Powder Valley. Their web-site shows a big hit, but you just need to check from time to time. I buy in 8 lb. jugs and also primers to justify the shipping cost plus 27.50 hazards shipping fee.

Even so if they have what you need, buying in bulk saves you money.

MidwayUSA & Midsouth Shooting Supply, Local gun shop the Haz mat charge is passed on to you also. Just getting the powderyour looking for is hard enohgh.

I have had most of my powder supplies from powdervalleyinc.com or Recobstargetshop.com. There are a few forums that have posts to track in stock components (smith-wessonforum.com, thehighroad.org, and Calguns.com).
Also have used Bass Pro, since they dont charge shipping or HM if shipped to store.

Keep looking. My local gun store in a town of 7000 probably has over 300# on the shelf. Many, many, many different types.

Here in SoCal, I can find powder, but with no consistency of brand or formula. So we are forever working up loads and taking lots of notes.

It seems that the most available powders here in San Diego can be used for shot shell or pistol loading. That versatility might be the reason the stores are buying, to keep inventory lower? Not sure, but I will say that I haven't found a powder I hate yet.

Most recently, for 9mm, .38 spl, and .45 acp, I have used:

Autocomp
800x
True Blue

All we perfectly acceptable results.

My local guy just got a bunch of Alliant Powders and zero loading data . The salesman called and said he forgot to send the data out with it .

I can't buy in bulk so the only option for me is to buy locally. When the inventory is getting low I just call all the shops within a 2 hr. drive that I know carry powder and find out what they have in stock. If I find what I'm looking for, then I just ask if they will put a few back until I can get there. I've never had a store refuse to do this and some will even hold the powder for a couple of days once they get to know you. Also after a few buying trips and once I created a relationship with the shop, they will email or call me when they are getting a shipment and what's going to be in it.
