Where to buy in Texas?

Getting ready to make a handgun purchase and was wondering if anyone had any experience with Weber Guns in Temple or Elk Castle in Ft. Worth? Thanks.

Dont know anything about either. But In my area (Houston) the cheapest place (not counting used) would be the the Gun Shows. For used try Texas Gun Trader.

Where are you at in Texas? Cheaper Than Dirt is located in Fort Worth and they also have a retail store in McKinney. They continually beat Academy prices on handguns.

I recommend Bachman Pawn & Gun in Dallas. (Don't be misled by the name, a better description would be "Bachman Lots of Guns & a Little Pawn on the Side. ;) )They have an excellent selection of new handguns and give discounts if you pash with cash or a debit card.

I used to like Weber Guns in Temple, until the big Obama sell off that is. Weber was all over taking advantage of the price jump because of the lack of availability on guns and ammo at that time. I know everyone raised prices on everything at that time, but I feel Weber took it to a whole new level and took serious advantage of the situation. That turned me off to them, and I haven't been back since. I haven't written them off completely, but they seemed like such a great store before that that I just haven't looked at them the same since.

I'll second that recommendation.

Thanks guys for all your advice. I live near Stephenville and I think I'll give Elk Castle a try. Ft. Worth is not all that far and I've heard others recommend them. It's a shame about Weber's. I also heard they have a 'Gun Store' attitude as well.

Hello to all, new member here.

Since I live in Fort Worth I thought I would respond to this thread.

Although I have nothing against gun shops, I rarely, if ever, buy from a gun shop. The prices are way too high. I have seen gun show prices to be $100 to $200 less than what gun shops want for an identical gun.

There is a gun show in Fort Worth this weekend. None of the Fort Worth shows are as large as they were 20 years ago but it is still worth going if you need to browse and see what is available. It costs about $8 to get in, and now the city of Fort Worth is trying to ease its budget problems by charging for parking.

At the local DFW gun shows, Bachman Pawn & Gun usually has the best prices. Bachman is not always present at the Fort Worth shows. There are other dealers who come close to matching Bachman's price. The best DFW gun show is the Dallas Market Hall Show. The Fort Worth shows (there are several shows with different promoters) are not as good as the Dallas show. At least, that is my opinion.

I have been to Elk Castle several times. The staff is quite personable and helpful but I have gone in there only to look for holsters, etc. They have an indoor range but I will not shoot there. You cannot bring reloads to this range. This policy may have been changed since I last asked about this about a year ago. I guess they want to sell you factory ammo. They have rental guns available.

Another shop in Fort Worth is Winchester Gallery. Like Elk Castle, the prices are too high. They have an indoor range and I shoot there sometimes. They also have some pistol matches scheduled.

Cheaper Than Dirt is supposed to have better prices than other gun shops but not always. I guess you can say that their prices are normally somewhere between gun shop prices and gun show prices.

I recently stopped in Cabela's on the north side of Fort Worth. I was not impressed with their prices. Maybe they had raised prices due to the Christmas buying season.

Just south of Benbrook on Highway 377 is On Target. Not much of a gun selection and what they have is way over priced. However, their indoor range in nice. They also have rental guns available.

Unless you absolutely must have it now, and the gun shop is the only place that has what you want, I would take my time and browse the shops and the guns shows to compare price and selection.

Our gun shows are usually the same if not more expensive than the shops. However, I seldom buy a new gun. I haunt pawn shops and the dealers who specialize in used guns, both at their stores and the shows. I also find folks who are in dire straights and need to sell their collections. I found some really nice pieces that way.

For example, I just picked up a Walther PP, still in the box, that was a special order for the Danish police. It is only one of 1,500 made and one of a very few that would rate 98%. There is a beat up one online that I found selling for $2,995.00. I picked mine up for $400.00.

My safe is full of bargains. The treasure hunt is the most fun part of collecting.

+1 for Sporting Arms. (www.sportingarms.com)

Mom & Pop operation without the gun shop attitude, and their prices are very competitive.

If they don't have it, they'll order it, and they won't rake you over the coals on price. Great people to deal with--I've been doing business with them for going on seven years now.

You can request a quote on their website, no obligation, no signing in, no password, no phone calls or anything, if you are comparison shopping.

Elk Castle is one of the highest retail prices in the area, in my experience.

Depending on what you want to buy, check Academy Sporting Goods in metroplex.

Also, Bachmann Gun and Pawn will deal a little bit with you on stuff...

Best bet is the gun show at Market Hall on the weekend of the 14th and 15th...You can usually find individuals walking around with good deals to be had...

There's also one in Mesquite at the end of the month....

I usually just hit the DMH and the Mesquite [BigTown and Rodeo] shows to get the best deals,DMH is probably the biggest and best.FtWorth show isnt too bad but now you have to pay for parking too, pushes admission up to $13-14.00.I kinda factor that into the price of a gun whether I'm buying or selling, yup,,,thats me "negotiating on a nickle:D".

Other best bet is Pawn shops,I frequent them quite often and have good rapport with most of the counter guys.Do your research about the particular specimen your after and be reasonable when haggling,it usually benefits both parties in the end.

Also dont forget the classifieds here, sometimes it takes awhile but a good local pick up deal comes up every so often.

How about GT Distributors? In Austin I think or can order. I've ordered several guns from Buds and they usually have the best prices around, but looking at getting a Kahr PM9 and GT beats Buds by almost $80 or so.
Beats local by quite a bit. Some are for LEO only, but some are not.

I live down near Austin, but I understand Ft. Worth has one of the best gun shows in the state ... I'd probably try there first ... I love gun shows ...

I am in and out of Weber's several times a month and the prices I have found are in line with other retail locations. I currently have my eye on a NIB Ruger that is at the cheapest price I have found so far...

I am up in years and the their older salesman and I enjoy each other... We are both son's of the 'Greatest Generation' and have their values instilled in us...

Alpine Shooting Range

"Alpine Shooting Range" is in either Renden or Kennedale (I am not sure) just South of Ft. Worth, should be an easy detour on your way in from Stevenville. It is my favorite range $10.00 all day and very decent place to shoot. They also sell handguns, rifles and shotguns new and used. Probably not the best selection but they might have what you are looking for.

If you make it to Dallas try "Rays Sporting Goods" on Singleton close to down town. Decent selection and a good place to do business.

Good luck with your purchase.
James
