Where have all the deep curls gone?

I don't intend this to be a "shortage moan"--but I'm just curious if anyone might know what's up--specifically--I haven't been able to find speer deep curl/gold dots in 44 mag going on years now. Or maybe I just don't know how/where to look?

My guess is that they aren't being produced. The manufacturers placed lots of bullets on hiatus so that they could concentrate on others.

I thought about that--but most of the on-line reload outfits seem to persist in listing them as out of stock rather than discontinued. The deep curl/gold dots were consistently the best performing bullets I used in my 44's.

Did you contact Speer? I contacted them about .357 148 yen HBWC because I hadn't seen them in a while. They promptly replied.

Nearly all rifle versions have been discontinued (as of Jan 2014, I believe).
Several handgun versions were also discontinued.
And some of handgun "Deep Curls" that remain have reverted to their original name: Gold Dot HP.

To get the skinny on what's gone, what's still around, and what went back to "Gold Dot HP", you'll have to call Speer. Last time I checked, their website and catalog still showed several Deep Curls that have been verified as discontinued.

No, they have not. Speer renamed it's hunting version of the Gold Dot line "Deep Curl" to differentiate them from their SD line of Gold Dots, i.e., Gold Dots give rapid expansion at modest velocities whereas Deep Curls give controlled expansion at magnum velocities. This was in order to avoid confusion when both were available in the same caliber. Examples in .44 mag would be the 200 and 210 gr Gold Dots are intended for SD/HD, whereas the 240 and 270 gr Deep Curls are intended for hunting. When they were all called Gold Dots, some folks thought the 200 grainers could be hunted with and the 270s were good to go for SD/HD. Not so, thus the name change. If you find boxes of those bullets that were renamed Deep Curls with the old Gold Dot moniker on them, it is because they are old stock. I have several examples myself.
