when i was a kid, we could go shooting almost anywhere, now i live about 9 miles from where i grew up, and i have to look for places to shoot a rifle or pistol. urban sprawl is taking us over here in rural central texas----austin is growing up ,over and around us. ten years ago we had safe place to shoot 50bmg rounds in the middle of a 2000 acre ranch in the middle of other 2000-10000 acre ranches, virtually uninhabited and the houses were easy to not point a gun at. that same ranch has a sub division on 2 sides now. indoor ranges are so crowded you have to wait hours to get to the line. if i didn't have my own business established here i'd move. where do you shoot?

Our department has a range in the middle of the county, almost in the middle of nowhere. Plus I go to Camp Butner, to use their KD range.
I think it is state law in NC that almost every PD range has to be at the sh*t plant. About every shooting class I have been to down here is at the waste water treatment plant.
Real fun in the warm weather.

Other than a couple of times a year shooting on private property, I normally shoot at a local state operated gun range. (rifle and handgun) Here in southeastern lower Michigan, there are privately owned and operated gun ranges, but you have to be a member to use them. I wish there were more options for me. What I would really like to find is a rifle range that had distances beyond 100 yards. Now that would be cool!

kgs.

kgs, is shot at walled lake , michigan , in a tournament about 10 years ago, that sure is a pretty part of the country.

I shoot at my own private range. Since you are in Austin I would suggest you contact Sanborn Shooters in Smithville. They have a two hundred yard range. I don't have their phone number handy but if you can't find a listing for them post back and I will dig it up for you.

Ask the folks at the better gun shops where to shoot. They'll let you know the best places, because they want you comin' back to buy more ammo!

Since you live in the great state of Texas, you'll probably have access to a mixture of public ranges, private ranges (pay to join) and fairly-well-known-unofficial-shooting places out in the boonies (may be afar away). If you go to the latter, please pick up after yourself.

i have shot competitively with shotguns for years, know where all the shotgun ranges are. rifle ranges seem to be much harder to find. most shotgun clubs don't have rifle ranges due to the liability and impact area considerations. thanks for the sanborn reference.

I shoot at Garland Public Shooting Range most of the time. It is my favorite range. It is owned by Jim Day who runs a good range. He also has a range in the Austin area. I also shoot at Winchester in Dallas and Backwoods outside of Denton TX. For indoor ranges I shoot at Bullet Trap in Plano TX. and Targetmasters in Garland TX.
I also shoot at my deer lease southeast of Sonora TX. which is about 350 miles from Garland. Jim Hall
