all i want to do is try 2 boxes federal flitecontrol 00 buckshot and a box of super hot agulia .22lr. midway wants to charge me 9 bucks shipping. i can't find either ammo around town or gunshows.

IMO, If I were you I would either buy those couple of things with a larger order of other ammo you need/want to offset the shipping, or keep an eye on cabela's if you need any other stuff, they frequenty have shipping deals, but they require $99-150, or for you to buy something from a specific category(they just ended one for 1 cent shipping with any item of clothing or footwear in your order).

bundle it up

Ditto...you will want to offset the s/h with a few other items. If you get on the mail in list for some of the bigger suppliers you can watch for shipping specials. Cables, Midway and others send notice of many of their sales.

That's what I do, but sometimes I have to wait until I need enough stuff to, what I call is, a piggy back order.

Usually I have to wait about a month or so until I can justify making an order, but it saves me a lot of money on shipping, and most stuff is either discounted or on sale.

Not a big fan of Midway but they usually have everything I need in one order.

My favorite on-line ammo dealer is Grafs. There is no guesswork on what you will pay for shipping (they pay shipping).

I've occasionally bought from Cabelas. Their sale prices are pretty good sometimes and you can usually get free or discounted shipping if you time it right. Otherwise I always buy ammo locally due to shipping costs.

+1 for Grafs.

They sometimes have good deals so I used to casually check for my caliber every now and then. It's 4 dollars flat rate shipping for anything (IIRC) unless you do the primer/powder/hazmat.

Brownell's is also selling ammo now. Brownell's, Midway, and Graf's all accept a C&R and give you dealer prices after that. Well worth the $30 a year you will pay for the C&R. I've been buying my bulk CCI .22's with my C&R from Brownell's lately since their price was the best once you figured everything in. And I always seem to be ordering some AR stuff from them anyway!

The Sportsmans Guide Company sells ammo by the box or by the case. I don't know how their prices compare with some of the other sources already provided, but IMHO their prices aren't bad.

$9 for shipping any small amount of ammo doesn't seem to be too much of a price to pay. That's only the equivalent of about 2 gallons of gasoline, and the UPS truck does need to drive to your doorstep, pay the driver and all of the cargo handlers along the way. It's the 1st pound of cargo that costs the most, with the price of additional weight costing much less.
Minimum wage here is $8.25 per hour, and UPS pays over $10 per hour to their workers that load trucks here, and the average pay for UPS drivers is $75,000 per year.
Sometime early next year shipping any ammo will require paying a hazmat fee. That will add a significant price increase for shipping small amounts of ammo. Unless that hazmat fee requirement is changed, we won't be able to ship or receive ammo for anywhere near as cheap as it can be done right now.

That's a pretty good deal - save $3.05 on shipping.

Graf & Sons pays the freight!

Freight is prepaid to the 1st 48 states on regular ground service only except for target load ammo (trap, skeet and sporting clay ammo sold by the case). Each order will have a Non-Refundable $5.95 handling insurance charge for Internet orders and a $7.95 handling and insurance charge for mail, phone or fax orders added, excluding AK & HI orders, or any order where the customer pays actual freight & insurance. Orders shipping to AK & HI or any customer requesting a different ship via than UPS or FedEx ground will pay actual freight & insurance. We reserve the right to ship by UPS, FedEx, commercial truck or Parcel Post.

But does Graf's have the products that he wants and at the same price?

If there is an LGS you have dealt with on a regular bases that orders ammo from the manufacturer you want ammo from, be it Federal, Aguila, CCI etc., the LGS would probably not charge you much(if any) shipping on a couple boxes of special order ammo as long as you wait till they(LGS) is placing an order from that manufacturer for the ammo the LGS normally carries.
In other words, you want to try a couple boxes of Federal Flight Control. Wait till your LGS is placing an order from Federal and see if they'll include your two boxes.
Then try and talk your LGS into stocking the Flight Control rounds.;)

I hadn't heard of this, so I looked it up. It looks like FedEx will still ship small quantities without the hazmat fee: http://www.fedex.com/us/hazardous-materials/current-requirements/index.html

As of Jan. 1, 2011, DOT regulations allow shippers to ship Limited Quantity packages without any shipping papers. In this case, UNPOP is not required. However, the specific Limited Quantity Diamond Label must be applied to the package. Shipped via this method, the packages will not incur the hazardous materials surcharge. ...

I haven't located the definition of Limited Quantity, and I have stuff to do right now. Anybody have that information? Or maybe I should start a new thread when I get back online. Not much info on TFL about it.

I can personally recommend sgammo. I ordered 2 50rd boxes of 147gr Ranger T's. WAY less than at any LGS even taking shipping into consideration. Very fast shipping as well.

What is a C&R? I have a business and if I can buy that way for dealer cost its well worth while.
