Where do I get a hearing test?

Your family doctor should be able to refer you to a good audiologist. Mine did.

Good Guy is right....see a good audiologist. Go for the works...soundproof booth, etc. Otherwise you are wasting your time and money.

I am curious to hear (ha) your results, as I studied Audiology in college. Shooters tend to have a very identifiable audiogram, especially if they shoot without hearing protection. I always got those audiograms right on "Name That Etiology"!! ;)

I am concerned because I have fired a few (literally a few) rounds while outdoors without hearing protection. Only about 5 rounds in my whole life (while hunting), all handgun (9mm and .45). Only once did it make my ears ring. I doubt my hearing is too bad (maybe it is still perfect, I am young), but I do want a test just to know. I can't afford a doctor's advise, so I guess I will try to find an audiologist on my own.

Thanks for the advice. All this talk on the handgun forums about hearing loss has got me nervous. I usually wear double ear protection, but I am wondering just how much those few rounds I fired while hunting have affected my hearing.

Red Bull,

Try www.1800doctors.com

They have a doctor locator that you can give a whirl. If that doesn't work try calling them at 1-800-DOCTORS. Yes that is a real number :) They don't charge a thing for the referal.

Hope that helps,
Evan

This subject has intrigued me for some time.

I probably have shot thousands of 20 and 12 guage from age 12 to present (60+). Also thousands of .22 thru .308 over the same time period.

I started using "ears" about 2 years ago. Last year went for a physical and my hunting buddy doctor wanted me to get my hearing checked so I did. Passed with flying colors.

All this talk about hearing loss may be legit but ole suspious me thinks that some of this stuff may be just more hype. The sky is falling - ozone will kill you or lack of ozone will kill you - a study of 10 rats in Bimini found etc., etc.

It makes sense to use anything that might protect your hearing but maybe this problem is not consistent with everyone. Like I know people who have smoked, dipped and chewed for 50-60 years and still manage to continue to live.

RKBA!

Ok, Ottergal... I have a "noise floor" of about 15-20dB, a 4khz "notch" of about 70dB, what caused my loss? :) In my case, it was congenital....I was 3 1/2 months preemie. But, I will admit I'm probably an oddity. Hell, my wife will SWEARto it... :D

What you need to remember is that noise damage/hearing loss effects everyone differently. Some of us have excellent unaided vision in our later years while others the same age wear glasses. Same thing applies to hearing loss/damage. Noise effects diferent people differently. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones that you have good hearing in spite of your exposure to gun blasts.
