Hey guys I need a good cheap source for 7n1 russian surplus druganov match ammo. I was told that 7n1 was the most accurate and cost effective stuff out there..Thanks in advance!

Shalom, Izzy.
Sorry I can't help you with better info but you might want to try Dunham's Sporting Goods if you have one close. Our local store carries several kinds of 7.62x54R in new and surplus. I just bought some new Lapua brass from http://www.midwayusa.com and you could give them a try for the loaded ammo, too.
As long as you use this caliber, maybe you or someone else could answer a question for me. I bought two M-44 Hungarians recently and have a problem chambering milsurp ammo of any kind. The bolt has to be slammed hard and forced closed on the round to chamber at all and some steel cased stuff won't go in PERIOD. Sellier & Bellot will chamber slighly better and I tried 2 rounds of Norma which were fine but I'm not about to buy $2.00 per round ammo for a $45.00 carbine! I have not tried any Lapua handloads yet. By the way, I'm basically a handgun guy and these are my first ever bolt action rifles so I'm in effect a babe in the woods here. Can you offer any suggestions/solutions? Is this problem something that I am doing wrong? Thank You.

I would order some Russian surplus ammo from J&G Sales or Aim Surplus. It is corrosive. I got some last summer from J&G. It was sealed in cans (440 rounds per can I think - but I'm not sure). It seems to work fine, and it doesn't take long to clean the rifle after shooting, so the corrosive primers aren't a big deal to me. It was kind of interesting - the ammo was clearly Russian, but the cans were in a wood crate with Nicaraguan Sandinista markings - stickers, logos, etc., so I'm guessing it came from Russia, via Nicaragua, to the U.S.

VIEJO,
if you have to work that hard to chamber ammo in that rifle, STOP, until you have it checked for headspace and caliber by a competent gun smith.....don't want to see ya get hurt!!!!

BA,
Thank you for your concern. I did stop using the carbines and am presently looking for a local smith who is equal to the task. I know they are 7.62x54R but the headspace problem occurred to me so I shelved them both until somebody smarter than me checks them out. I did maintain downrange muzzle safety while fighting these things but I was not happy with the force required as an ND seems easy under those conditions.
As I said, I'm new to bolt action rifles but I knew something was drastically wrong and likely unsafe. I can wait to shoot them after they've been fixed or if they're hopeless, I'll just weld them into a sculpture commemorating the Hungarian freedom fighters of 1956.

(does the end of your post mean that you are also a fan of single shot rifles?)

I will inquire monday if J&G or aim has what I need, seemingly it has a 7n1 headstamp...funny you mention Niquraguan (Sp?) ammo. I remember an old S.O.F. article about Contra Sniping in which one of the "Combat Journalists" for that mag. found Russian 188 headstamp ball to be especialy accurate in comparison to other lots and advised the Contra sharpshooters to use only that type.
