Where can I find one...

I am looking for one of the m16a1 parts kits that flooded the market a short time ago. They were everywhere. Now I can't even find one on gunbroker...Anybody else know where these can be had nowadays?

You DO mean an AR15 parts kit, right?

Available in quantity from Brownell's.

If you mean an actual M16 parts kit, complete with disconnector, hammer, selector (3 position) and auto sear--well, I hope you have your select fire NFA rifle properly tax stamped and registered.

Try that again.

no I DO NOT, mean an AR15 parts kit....since someone is in correction, know-it-all mode. I MEAN an M16A1 parts kit...These kits were made from de-milling M16A1 rifles, not from AR-15 Rifles...and have been sold as M16A1 parts kits..reference

Or are all of these companies incorrectly listing these sets? maybe you should send them a letter...and don't forget to send one to century also...

And since you deemed necessary to list all the full-auto capable parts of the rifle....You forgot to mention the bolt. The REASON I specified the
M16A1 parts set, is because there are about 3000 different ar15 sets available, but I am looking for the retro- colt made, no brass deflector, teardrop forward assist, CH forge code, style...not DPMS blah blah blah...

As far as the Tax stamp issue goes, while I admire your knowledge on the subject it is not needed to order a parts set made from an M16a1 rifle...and some of the companies selling them DID include the select fire components and charged extra to take them out before sending to you...

Had I said "I want to build an M16A1", thats a different story...however I can assure you it is legal to Build an AR15 out of an M16A1 parts set...

OK, now if I am through being incorrectly corrected...Does anyone know where to get one of these sets?

Well, I must say that I didn't mean to rain on your parade.

Just for fun and giggles, you might be interested in reading 27 CFR 479.11.

You might particularly be interested in pages 141 and 142. Read them if you want.

Now, have a good time with those parts, if you decide to purchase them.

Bye, now.

I have read that...and the operable paragraph is this

In order to avoid violations of the NFA, M16, hammers, triggers, disconnectors, selectors and bolt
carriers must not be used in assembly of AR-15 type semiautomatic rifles, unless the M16 parts have
been modified to AR-15 Model SP1 configuration. Any AR-15 type rifles which have been assembled
with M16 internal components should have those parts removed and replaced with AR-15 Model SP1
type parts which are available commercially. The M16 components also may be modified to AR-15
Model SP1 configuration.

so the parts can legally be used to make an AR15....And still , that document would not change the M16A1 parts kit into an AR15 parts kit...its how its assembled that triggers the ATF rulings.

My point is...my original post I wanted simple information. And instead of trying to help...you tried to correct me, with no basis. The document you reference says nothing about not being able to buy a parts set. Many sellers sold these until last month when they ran dry...I bought one and assembled a great Retro AR build. Completely legal.

good day, Sir

And a good day to you, as well.

Question...are you aware of what it takes to modify the parts specified to the parts found in the Colt SP1 configuration?

(And, to answer the unspoken question--no, after being told off in a most spectacular fashion, I have no clue as to why I am still posting in this thread--other than the desire to try to help a fellow shooter avoid legal trouble. I'll say this much--I have an extensive background with the M16/AR15 series and know what the modifications entail. It would be MUCH cheaper to simply buy the correct modern parts.)

And, by the way--if you assembled an AR15 using M16 parts--including the hammer, selector, disconnector and bolt carrier group--it is NOT a legal firearm.

Well...
This is an interesting topic.
And sorry about the hijack, BlackJack- if you like, I'll delete this post and start a new thread.

Not having any knowledge of this, what is the reasoning behind the regs which preclude the use of M16 parts which are not related to the firing mechanism?
"Internal components" would seem to include the forward assist which is the gist of the OP's interest.

How do these parts- including the BCG- differ from the civvie AR, and what is required to "modify" them to be in compliance?

Seemed like it would be pretty cool to use all authentic parts (with the exclusion of the firing mechanism) to build an AR. I would never have thought it would be a ticket to Club Fed- and I'll bet there's more than one modded AR out there belonging to some who didn't know better as well.

Again, I'll delete this and start another thread if you like.

tobnpr, the Feds don't care at all about components that are not related to the fire control group.

Here's what they ARE looking at...

1. Hammer...the civilian versions do NOT have the "hump" on the back of the hammer. The only purpose for that hump is to catch the bottom lip of the auto sear.

2. Selector--there are a number of different selectors available. However, the civilian market only uses the 2 position selector--NOT the 3 position safe/semi/auto (or) burst selector.

3. Auto Sear...try explaining THAT one away at the range, unless you have the papers with you or a valid copy thereof.

As a matter of fact, it is impossible to install the auto sear without modifying the receiver to accept it.

3. Bolt Carrier--the bolt carrier itself differs greatly between the civilian and military versions. The military/full auto capable carrier has the full-length back housing--the bottom of this housing is what trips the auto sear to release the hammer.

Owning any ONE of those parts might not raise too many eyebrows. Owning the entire FCG--installed into a rifle--will earn some unwanted attention.

It actually makes mention of this in 27 CFR. You can modify the parts for use--but why bother? Get current, AR15 legal parts, and save the headache.

OK to clarify...Once again....

I was corrected because I was looking for an M16 parts kit....
I want said parts kit to build an retro rifle...I did not ask for legal advice about what parts to use...I have an AR15 FCG that would be used in conjunction with the M16A1 parts kit to build a LEGAL AR15, a replica of the colt M16A1.

I too have extensive knowledge in the AR15 arena, at least enough to not get me in trouble. But Alas, this is not what I asked for in the original post. I asked where I could get said Parts kit...did not say I was going to build an
M16.

Yes, I went off because I see many many times in the forums where people do not answer a question because they are too busy trying to push their knowledge on others. If I had questions about what parts I could and could not use, I would have asked. I don't want any hard feelings powderman, but the comment about what I "DO mean" was very corrective and un needed.

I am still looking for an M16A1 parts kit....Hell, I can buy a MK19 parts kit on gun broker, but that does not mean that I think I am able to legally put together a fully automatic grenade launcher.

The Parts could be modified to comply with NFA, but you are very correct in that it would be a complete waste of time and effort with so many inexpensive FCG's on the market. However, that was not my original inquiry.

Tobnpr,

No need to delete your post, I don't mind a bit. And what powderman says about the FCG parts is absolutely correct. Those are the differences between the M16 and AR15 FCG's.

And Yes, it is VERY cool to own an M16 look alike made from almost all original parts. My current one, I bought a colt M16a1 parts kit from Sarco when they had them for 500 bucks (a great deal for all colt parts)...got an AR FCG for about 40 bucks and used a Novak Spud retro lower to make a very authentic looking and cool AR that is a throwback from the norm. I used the original M16 full auto bolt, withou the full auto FCG this is perfectly acceptable. For such a cool gun at such a low price, its a great project and a great shooter.

The problem is, now no one seems to have any more of the needed parts kits...I wanted to build one for my wife.

What is wrong with you people?

This guy wants a authentic Colt M16A1 upper. He seems to know what is required of modifying trigger parts so the gun wouldn't be considered a post sample.

If you don't know where the parts kits went, let it go!

I understand completely what the OP is saying and can appreciate his frustration. But I gotta tell ya about my experience. I had a CAR-15 SP1 back in the early 80's that had an M16 trigger assembly in it. It would allow the selector to go to the Full-Auto position but there were no other full-auto parts in the rifle. I was young and had no idea these parts were even in it (it was my first AR and I bought it at a Pawn Shop). I took it to a Gunshow to try to sell it. One of the dealers I showed it to turned me in to ATF. I got removed from the Gunshow and questioned for several hours. They took my rifle and let me go after they were finally convinced that I was just a dumb kid that didn't know any better.
I say this because I really don't think I had an illegal rifle but the ATF guys had enough reasonable suspicion to take my rifle and almost destroy my chance to continue to be a firearms owner. They can do what ever they want based on their interpretation of the law so why give them an excuse. Stay as far away from M16 parts as you can. FWIW...
