I am well aware of the current shortage of .22lr ammo due to hoarding. But, I have been shopping for CCI Stingers for weeks. Not one of the ten or so gun shops in my area have them or have been able to get them for months. The online vendors do not have in stock either and are not taking orders. I am wondering if CCI has stopped production to concentrate on other ammo. I plan to call or e-mail them today. I need it because my pocket carry pistols work most reliabably with it. Good ammo.

No such thing as scalpers reselling ammo - either you like the price or you don't. You are free to pass up buying from them.

Yep--they are scalpers

scalp·er /ˈskalpər/

noun informal
noun: scalper; plural noun: scalpers
1. a person who resells shares or tickets at a large or quick profit.

I have no use for'em. This entire situation has been fabricated by fear and induced paranoia. The scalpers are taking advantage of the situation at the expense of the rest of us. Those of us that simply want to shoot same as last year, we get to pony up or do without. Ticks me off.

Not selling shares or tickets
Called FREE Enterprise - you are FREE to buy or not
The only ones whining seem to be the ones who aren't selling things for a profit or didn't plan ahead

I am well aware of instances where people have inside deals at walmarts to scoop up ammo before it ever reaches the shelf, for resale. There is a great deal of money to be made, both for the scalper and the employee.
Last week, my Walmart got in six bulk boxes of 5.56 ammo...1000rds for $449. I stepped away for a moment, when I came back, two young employees were crouched over (the boxes were on the bottom shelf of the case), and one was taking a pic with his smartphone...they looked up at me like they were guilty of something.

Got news for ya, There are scalpers and it sounds to me as though you have some ammo for sale. Just sayin.:D

The term is not just reserved for the selling of tickets. It is used to refer to the selling of many goods for a profit when they are scarce. Yes, it is capitalism, but to think that people should have warm, fuzzy thoughts towards those that have been hoarding ammo by means fair or foul, and reselling at high prices is probably a bit foolish.

Just be patient. The ammo market is slowly getting better. I'm seeing .22 available, though not Stingers.

Not me, I'm still shooting the .22s I bought over a decade ago, back when you could buy cases of 6250 rounds for $95, Therefore they aren't scalping - if you WILLINGLY pay their asking price (and I wouldn't either) then you didn't get scalped or gouged. if you didn't pay their asking price and walked on by, you didn't get scalped or gouged - in either case it is not scalping or gouging.

The term is not just reserved for the selling of tickets.

By the previous posting of the definition, it is, but it doesn't matter. There are other outlets for the product and you do not have to pay that person's price.

Same thing here in Oregon, seeing some centerfire and 17HRM ammo come back to the shelves but not yet .22LR. It could be "just around the corner." But considering that most ammo manufacturers have 1-2 YEARS of backlogged orders it could take some time to get it in enough quantity to alleviate the market arbitrage. :)

But with all the ammo shortages starting back in at least 1994, I have learned to stock up during times of plenty. But I know some new shooters that were happy to pay the high prices to just have SOME ammo for their new firearm. High prices keep it on the shelf for those most desperate. Price controls always result in even worse shortages. If you don't like paying high prices then PLAN AHEAD and stock up (sort of like dollar cost averaging with stocks). Probably most of us have been caught unawares at least once, but like the old adage goes, "Trick me once, shame on you; trick me twice, shame on me."

Yes, they are scalpers. No, they aren't doing anything illegal. No, I won't pay the price. Yes, I will laugh like heck when they eventually get stuck with all that ammo, just like "house flippers" got stuck with their life savings tied up in worthless houses in 2007.

I also have plenty of rimfire to keep me shooting. I bought Blazer bulk boxes for about $15 a box and have a few.
I will buy when I see the CCI I like at the real price.
A few weeks ago, my Walmart had MiniMag 100rd boxes...12 of them at $7.49 a box. First time I have seen rimfire there in at least six months. I could have had my wife come back and buy 3 more, but I want another shooter to get some like I did.
I limited out at 3 boxes. Now, I suppose I could join the scalper brigade and sell two boxes at an outrageous price which would return my whole investment and leave me with 100rds.
I just checked gunbroker and a 100rd box of MiniMag has a "buy it now" of $25!!!
So there is obviously money to be made. Is it any wonder it doesn't make it to the shelf often?
And I wondered why the salesperson asked me if I wanted the display box...why would I? Unless I was reselling.

I used to shoot nothing but Stingers, and never paid more than $3/box. When they started to be scarce, and cost more than my .45 ACP handloads, I stopped buying them, but have to agree that Stingers have been scarce for years.

I've been on GunBroker a few times lately and noticed all the 22 scalpers - yes they are scalpers I don't care if you want to call it capitalism or a glass eyed squealing worm - are not getting any bids on their high priced 22's. I hope they lose their arse trying to take advantage of fellow shooters. I'm not whinning either I got plenty.

They're probably not going to lose out on anything. They probably paid normal cheap retail. Months ago the guy at Academy told me they had scalpers lined up outside their doors on ammo shipment days that cleared them out in minutes.

Here is my take on when a seller becomes a scalper.

If a seller on gunbroker or at the gunshow is selling a $20 box of bulk ammo for $100 he is a scalper. But if he list that same box of ammo on gunbroker for say $25 for a $5 profit and then lets the potential buyers bid it up to $100 then he is not a scalper. Just someone who has a product someone else is willing to pay a crazy price for. It may be worth it to that buyer because without that one box of ammo his gun is just a stick.

I have been seeing 22 ammo at my local Academy for several weeks now. I think there are limits ( I have lots of ammo so don't buy) but at least its a start. I haven't seen any 22 at walmart. But I don't look very often even though I am in there just about every other day.

The joke is going to be on all of those scalpers who sunk their life savings into tons of 22LR. Within 6 months to a year, perhaps sooner, .22LR ammo will be widely available. The scalpers won't be smart enough to anticipate this, and they won't be willing to sell their precious ammo for a loss, like you would with a bad investment, and move on. So, there will be a huge amount of aging .22 ammo that will tarnish over time and then be virtually worthless. I found the thread on everyone's suggestions on what to do with tarnished .22LR ammo enlightening - no market for ugly .22LR ammo, and you might even have to pay someone to dispose of it.

I'm just going to sit back, eat popcorn, shoot Wolf 9mm for now and watch the .22LR hoarding story unfold over the next year.:D
