You always see new and old M-1's for sale ,but where are the surplus M-14's? They must have been surplused out somewhere along the way.I know Springfield has a new one for sale(in case you just won the lotto),but i'm looking to find one in like new condition for ohhhhh $100 bucks or so,so let me know where i can snag one of those bad boys! Thanx:)

As I understand it there are no surplus m14's, I have heard that all of the receivers were cut in half, because it was possible to convert them to full auto.

M-14s have a selector switch for full auto. They will never be surplused out to the general public for that reason and the fact that Klinton gave most all of them away.

Tropical Z,

What McShot said.....

By BATF rules, "Once a machine gun, ALWAYS a machine gun".

Even with the possibility of permanently de-activating the selecter switch on an M14, it is STILL AND ALWAYS WIL BE classed by the BATF as a full auto weapon and will never be made available for public sale.

The commercial version M1A, on the other hand, had it's receivers desigined and MADE in semi-auto only configuration, and are thereby legal by BATF rules.

Also, there were not nearly as many M14's made as M1's. 1.5 mil, vs. 5.5 mil (IIRC), and of those 1.5 mil, over half were given away to foreign governments. OF the remainder, the vast majority have already gone to "Captain Crunch", thanks to our favorite ex Mr. President. I've seen it estimated that there are no more than a few thousand M14's still in US inventory.

at least some of them ended up here in England in the mid '80s. At first they were acceptable to the authorities with the the selector lock in place, later the lock and the connector parts had to be removed and bits ground off the receiver to stop them being refitted. The ones you can see in Kubrick's 'FMJ' came from this source. When we went to Perry in 1987 one of us took his M-14 along, with the receiver restamped with a sorta A over the 4. You didn't know Winchester made M1As, right? ;)
All such semi-auto rifles were later banned here:mad:

swampyMO nailed it. BTW, all we need is to change that admin ruling (memo to NRA--get on it).

Many were destroyed when we elected Clinton. When the Republicans were elected to Congress, they stopped (temporarily) Cap'n Crunch in Alabama. Clinton had many M-14s sent to the Baltic States. That way they can never come back by law!

A few are reportedly in Canada. I had e-mail correspondence with a guy on rec.guns who reported that they could be had for a song, relatively speaking ($600 or so, IIRC, in flimsy Canadian dollars!).

Made me wanna cry.

I knew a fellow who worked in some interesting places...

He had pictures of open crates of M14's in Nicaraugua (sp?) during the Reagan years.

They didn't all get crunched; some got unofficially donated...

Freds Military M14 rifle stocks occasionally has a "lobby your reprentatives for the release of the M14s in surplus to the american rifleman" article in SGN

How to Get an M14 Program

(and keep your freedoms)

1. Find out the names and addresses - and telephone numbers -
of your Federal [and State and Local] Representatives. Call the
reference desk at your local library to find them out - and keep
them where you can get to them easily!

2. Write or call your representatives in Congress (and the
Statehouse) with a "one minute" letter or phone call (see below).

3. Get the message to others about how easy it is to be effective in
promoting a DCM M14 program. This is crucial. Only if you get your
gun-owning friends involved will you make the real difference that
we need to make.

4. YOU should DO MORE: Sign up with NRA-ILA
Grassroots (1-800-392-8683). Get ready for the next election
- get registered, get your friends motivated, KNOW who to vote for
nationally and for the statehouse. Get active! The only thing you
have to lose is your freedom! What you have to win is an M14!

Ignore your gun rights --- and they'll go away!

What to Say in Your One-Minute
Letter or Phone Call

Dear Sir:
I am strongly for a semiautomatic M14 program through the DCM.
This would result in hundreds of millions saved to reduce the
deficit. All my friends feel the same way, but they are too lazy to
write - but they do vote.

Sincerely,
_________

Do not copy the above example exactly - use your own words to
get the point across, or take the examples below and use different
parts of each. Remember, a "one-minute" letter gets the point
across to your representative just as effectively as a three page
letter: he knows your position, he knows how you feel, he knows
how you want him to vote, and he knows you are a voter who is
watching him.

Other Sample Letters (Pick any one, or combine different ones):I
not only want you to vote against any bill which includes gun
control;

I want you to be "pro-active" in Congress and help us get
an M14 DCM program.
If the problem is the deficit, why is our government
throwing away hundreds of millions of dollars by
destroying M14 rifles - some of which are brand new!?
Quit wasting taxpayer money and allow the sale of
semi-auto M14s through DCM - up to 300-600 million
realized in DEFICIT REDUCTION
Remember to always be polite in making your points. Treat
your reps with consideration - like they are humans - and you
will get a lot farther. Remember further - they are YOUR
rights, and the price of liberty is eternal vigilance
(Translation: "You snooze - you lose"). Join RGC - purchase
M1 & M14 parts from DCM. Qualify to purchase an M1 Garand!
Send a $20 check payable to "RGC" for membership card,
info packet, and ordering forms. Last, and NOT least, get the
word out! Your friends and shooting buddies need to know
about our program - that gun owners are organizing and will
not be pushed around anymore. This year, make a difference
- and get ready to send them a message in the next election!

Don't Talk About it! Do It! Protect Your Firearms Heritage.
WRITE A "ONE-MINUTE LETTER"!

(Do not copy exactly) "Dear Sir: My friends and I urge you to
reduce the deficit 300-600 million bucks through allowing the
sale of DoD semi-auto M14s, M1 carbines, etc. to the
law-abiding, taxpaying voters. Thank you for listening to a
voter. Sincerely, _________"

Send to your (two Senators), US Senate, Wash. DC 20510
and (your Representative), US House of Rep. Wash DC 20515

Save and make a copy of this and pass it on to a friend!
register & vote, and make sure your gun-owning friends do
also!

It does not take a lot of time
to get your Congressman's
ear. A "One Minute Letter"
will count just as much as a
three-page letter - but takes a
lot less time to write. Make
your opinion count - send a
"One Minute Letter"!

The "once a machinegun..." is not a ruling, it is the law, although the law does not use those exact words.

I very much doubt we can ever get the law changed, but if each of us contributed the value of one (1) M1A to the NRA PVF or ILA, we could at least beat back the antis.

As it is, we seem to be full of bull and bluster about our "rights" but unwilling to spend even a few dollars or a few minutes of our time to protect them.

We would rather buy a new rifle than worry about whether we will be allowed to keep it.

We would rather go shooting than write a letter to our representatives.

We would rather blow a bunch of s*it on here about what we will do to "them" if they try to take our guns than spend a little time and money to make sure that day doesn't come.

As for shooting it out, you and your AR-15 against tanks, dream on!

Jim

From what I have read over at the M14 forum at www.gunandknife.com there are 48 legally owned and NFA registered genuine M14 rifles in the United States. The rest have either been destroyed, given to foreign governments or remain in the armories of the United States Armed Forces.

The Army and the Marine Corps are considering the "designated marksman" concept which would arm one or more soldiers in each rifle squad with an M14. The remaining M14 inventory would be needed to support this concept.

I know where 2000 are!

I've read this thread for 2 odd days now and forgot:

We carried the M14 at the Citadel, the cadets there still do.

That's about 2000, they were complete except for firing pins, which were issued during field excercises.

Beautiful rifles, with the red rust colored synthetic sticks.

They've got a TON of mags there, too.

I have heard that they used to present the Camp Perry winner with a semi M14 as well.

The Army has a different concept of DM then the Marines

Hard Ball,

I don't think that the Army will ever go to a designated marksman utilizing the M14 like the Marines did. The Army has a totally different view of the entire concept.

The Army views the designated marksman as a target aquisition asset. He's more likely to be able to find a target with his optics and direct the rest of the squad's fire on it with tracers, AN/PAQ-4C etc. He also is to be able to place precise fires into bunker openings etc. M16A2 with 4x optics (ACOG/ELCAN) is what the Army is looking at in the literature and articles I've seen.

I don't look for the Army to put the M14 into service in that capacity. Now the Marines have selected a modified M14 to use in that role. I understand they are having some problems with the program, but I've only heard that through "the grapevine".

This would leave plenty of M14s for us to enjoy. If we ever get marksmanship back into the high schools and change our culture we may have a chance of seeing the law changed. Until then, we'll just have to be satisfied with the M14 clones.

Jeff - proud owner of a NM M1A, one of the last to come out of Devine TX.
