When was the 870 first produced?

As the title says, "When was the 870 first produced?"

I tried the search and did not find this information.

Thanks John. I am working on a 16 ga. for my bride and I sent a note to Big Green to see what vintage it is. It is a '56. I had never really thought about owning an 870 from the 50's and it occured to me that I did not even know when they began to sell 'em. Now I do. :D

If your library or specialty bookseller has it, read, "Shotguns", by the late Elmer Keith. It goes into considerable depth on the M870 and why Keith thought it was a superb new design. The revised edition of about 1961 has added chapters at the back.

Amazon.com may be the cheapest good place to find a copy. Sporting book dealers will gouge you more for this classic.
