When to try a different powder

Shooting a red 700 sps varmint 308 have loaded 60 rounds so far. First 3 batches I made were picked from the nosler book because Imiss using nosler accubond 165gr. I made 5 rounds at low point 5 rounds at mid point and 5 at high working my way up. The low 42.5 grains was the most accurate shooting .75. So I loaded 15 more rounds 5 at 42.5 5 at 43 and 5 at 43.5. When I shot them they all grouped at little over a inch. But the 42.5 was the tighter of the 3 groups so I figured I'd try loading 42.5 again and shot more and it was a slightly larger group. I'm using blc2 powder my gun was cleaned and fouled out before every session. Should I try a different powder and if so any recomendations. I'm trying to get the gun to shoot consitant .5 groups at 100 yards. I'd even settle for .75 groups. Using the gun for deer, varmint, and target. I'd like to be able to reach out and touch something with while staying consitant. Ps all factory loads I've shot grouped at over an inch

0.5 grain increments are still pretty large and you may be missing the sweet spot. I have found a couple pet loads for my AR15 and 0.1 grain either side will noticeably open up the groups.

There are a number of methods for load development. For me I like the Dan Newberry OCW (optimal charge weight) method. He provides for free, very detailed instructions and his rational. Here is a link to his site:

I cut n pasted his instructions into a word program and then printed and keep a copy the binder I take to the range for reference (and sharing with other shooters).

IMR 4895, 4064, 3031 are tried and true .308 Winchester powders.

Varget, RL 15, VV 140 are some of the newest excellent powders.

I would suggest the Varget first.

Hey now, them's fighting words.... I'll have you know that Remington's color is American John Deere Green, not Commie Russian Red. :)

What a great resource, Oley. If something needs a 0.1 gr difference to make a material difference, it's too finicky for my tastes and precision level. But I'm sure you're right about that.

I see more people suggest 4064 as the go-to powder for accuracy in a 308 than probably all others combined. I've used it in the past with good results.

I'm primarily a hunter instead of target shooter and am interested in getting every fps I can get and still consistently put 3 shots around .75". A max charge of Varget does that for me, often much closer to .5" so it has become my preferred 308 powder. 4895, and RL15 have also worked well.

I don't fool with anything smaller than .5 gr increments in anything I load for. That has always worked for me. I suppose when you are dealing with cases that hold a lot less powder .5 is a big step compared to 308.

can't argue about being too dang finicky. pretty much eliminates any chance of ever using a powder measure. Especially with those dang Varget cylindrical pellets.

"Bought some 4064 today"

Good idea, but you will have to trickle every charge unless you are using a Chargemaster or similar.

VVN140 has also been outstanding for me in my 700.
